Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is something that's crazier than the wildest dreams of any ~1970s nerd, but exists today? I'll start with an easy one:

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What did/do you want to be when you grew/grow up?
2·1 month agoI had a radio telescope array in my home town and got to do work experience there which was really cool. But then I chickened out when it came time to choose university courses, because I was worried about what a career in the field would look like in Australia…

13·2 months agoHow does that work for the next generation of employees, the ones that weren’t there from the beginning? Doesn’t it mean privatisation as people retire and sell off their shares? And doesn’t it mean dilution of value for new employees as their shares represent an ever smaller portion of the company?
How do they approach those issues?

Technology@lemmy.world•Australians to get at least three hours a day of free solar power – even if they don’t have solar panelsEnglish
9·2 months agoYeah, that’s how we do it. Pre load the temperature before 4pm, timers, solar panels and a battery. It’s definitely worth it for us, but if someone doesn’t adjust their habits, they can end up worse off on the solar saver tariffs.

Technology@lemmy.world•Australians to get at least three hours a day of free solar power – even if they don’t have solar panelsEnglish
423·2 months agoThe part that this headline skips over is that it’s followed by 5 hours of pricing that are 3 times the regular rate, and then the rest of the day is a rare slightly under the old rate. The expensive rate kicks in between 4pm and 9pm, which is pretty much when the solar supply eases off and dries up.
If you work from home, it’s possible to shift some of the big load equipment to early afternoon, but some, like ovens and heaters aren’t so easy to shift. You really need to do the maths to see if it works.
If you’ve got a battery, you’re in a better position, because you can use your own solar and/or the free hours to top the battery up, and then draw on it during the expensive hours. Our battery isn’t quite big enough to carry us through 5 hours, but it gets us most of the way there, so the maths made it worth us to change to the new tariff.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•openmic.social — a new open-discourse instance that doesn't shadowbanEnglish
14·2 months agoPeople aren’t trying to trap you. What you’re seeing is vulnerable people who have seen and heard all of this before trying to get your boundaries out in the open before your instance gets momentum. That way, they can decide whether to interact with your instance, block it or defederate it before being exposed to yet more hate targeting them under the veneer of “civil debate”.

131·2 months agoThat’s not good enough. You’re saying they have the right to attack people, but at least the targeted people can defend themselves. Those are not comparable

342·2 months agoSo, transphobia, racism, misogyny, all acceptable as long as it’s aimed broadly, and doesn’t become targeted harassment of an individual?
As in pushing back and making noise when people post stuff that helps keep her relevant.
If I have a tool for decreasing the amount of harm she does, this is it.
Will it make much difference? No, but if a single person hesitates before posting potter stuff in the future, then it helped a little
This is what aiming at her looks like.
As long as you can accept that many people don’t want to see Potter memes and can accept a little pushback, you’ll be doing better than most folk.
Keeping her relevant in popular culture is supporting her financially, politically and socially, because her relevance influences both her wealth and her political clout.
And I’m going to pushback against that. In this case, it was a single line snarky comment that referenced the meme in question. In response, I got 5 or so responses from people, each of them multi paragraph long, insisting on telling me just how it’s actually ok to post Rowling stuff.
And from my perspective, if you’re ok enough with Rowling to not say anything when a Rowling meme is posted, you should also be ok enough with someone posting a snarky one liner in pushback against it.
But if folk are ok with a meme that entrenches the relevance of a virulent transphobe, but a snarky response to that meme warrants a multi paragraph response, then it might be time to re-evaluate priorities…
If it were against the rules, I’d have reported it.
Instead, I made a snarky comment, because even though it’s not against the rules, the less Rowling in the world, the better.
I, like many folk, just want to see less of Rowling, not more. That’s all
