Sony didn’t own him, Universal did. After the original trilogy and first racing game the series’ original developers (Naughty Dog) left to work on Jak and Daxter and Universal farmed the property out to other developers during the PS2 days. The games weren’t very good and sales declined so eventually they just stopped making them.
More recently they put out a remake of the original trilogy and a new sequel that did alright, but I guess not well enough to keep milking the franchise.
