I want to move away from Google and was ready to make the shift to proton exactly the day before all that drama started about the CEO being a trump bootlicker and stuff…

Then I looked into some alternatives and haven’t moved yet. So I really can’t decide which one from tuta, Mailbox, kSuite or maybe still proton provides the best service. And recommendations or experiences y’all want to share to help me decide? :)

Either a good UI (web/iOS) or very good compatibility with third party apps, good spamfilters and maybe an integrated calendar would be important features.

I use tuta. There isn’t good compatibility with third party apps. Ui is definitely uglier than proton or Gmail but I like it. It’s simple, straight to the point and not so “spammy” like proton. It has an integrated calender. Can’t say anything for spam filter since I’ve been very careful this time with my new adress and haven’t received spam yet. Search function kind of sucks and is very slow.

My ref link if you decide to go with it but no pressure https://app.tuta.com/signup?ref=Y2dVTzZaUUw

I semi like and trust tuta but the Ui is shit and you cant use it with any other mail clients. After my subscription with tuta ends i think im going to use my domain on mailbox.org.

I spent a year on proton and thought the service was pretty good but decided to leave shortly after the tweet drama. Partially for the tweets but partially because I was switching to my own domain and I was asking my friends and family to change my address anyways. Tried a few other services. Here’s my 2 cents.

Mailbox.org is good but slow and dated. Tuta is good but seems like it’s declining. Posteo is good but dated

I also looked deeper and thought about email encryption. If you email an address that isn’t encrypting like hotmail, gmail, etc… Which I was most of the time, the value goes down. Also if you want to use standard protocols with a 3rd party app (calendar, contacts, Thunderbird, etc…) The app needs to support the encryption option or you go with no encryption. Proton only works within their apps or their mail bridge which didn’t do calendar. Using something like Signal for secure coms is a better option anyways.

I ended up going with a compromise. Fastmail. Worked with my custom domain, was fast, uses standard protocols (carddav, caldav, etc…), and end-to-end encryption is supported if I want to go that route later.

Its not perfect and costs more than others but it checked off my priorities.

My biggest recommendation is to get 1 or 2 customs domains. 1 for family and friends, and 1 for using with Addy, simplelogin, or Firefox relay. This allows you to move email providers in the future without having to change your email address(es). The relay service allows you to hand out addresses like candy to greedy irresponsible websites, and feel safe knowing you can just disable a particular address if that website sells your data or gets hacked.

Edit: Firefox relay doesn’t support custom domains

Disrꝏt’S only free one with mail client support I know of. Serviceable for my use case of (registering|logging into) accounts (exception : Tried signing up for anilist once , turns out they ban disrꝏt mails) while not having em tied to my IRL identity (still use Gmail for this ⚰) , but they disallow alt accounts tho dunno how well that’s enforced

Never use any other feature of mail services besides mail , so can’t vouch

Specifically the CEO of Proton thinks the Republicans were more responsive to his concerns about privacy, if I remember correctly.

I changed to Proton, but I don’t want to spend money on Proton Drive because if I do and my payment lapses then I’ll be unable to receive emails. FFS, why are they giving paying customers a less reliable service. Considered getting the lifetime Proton Pass offer but since I’ll never use it it’s too much to spend just on priority customer service and ensuring my account won’t get deleted if I end up in a coma.

For the price of a cheap VPS and a couple of hours setup you could run YUNOhost, which comes with email set up out of the box. It integrates perfectly with Thunderbird on desktop and android and you can install other cool stuff on it as well.

Installation is a bit more involved than signing up with a commercial email provider but I thought I’d mention it. I had no previous experience of server admin and was able to get it set up and my server is still going strong after nearly three years.
