I know that my blatant request for this might get me in trouble, but please help me, I’m in a third world country and i just won that iPhone in a contest, I got depressed after knowing the price of the game(which is literally a quarter of my dad’s wage, he might go nuts if i told him to buy the game 😂)anyway, i don’t want to return to my old infinix phone, please help😭🙏

Sell that iPhone and make enough so that your dad doesn’t have to work for the next couple of years.

As a long time poor person myself, please don’t give this sort advice. It doesn’t help. When your poor, getting something like OPs competition win can make life feel not so glum. What you’re saying is to sell happiness for slightly more security that will only last so long. Once the extra runs out, you’re back where you were with zero ability to buy that ‘luxury’ back. Having something nice when your poor can make a big difference to mental health.

Also please don’t assume that poor people don’t know how to budget and that they need unsolicited financial advice from strangers who don’t have any idea what their day to day circumstances and finances are.

This is exactly right, and thanks for saying it. The assumption that poor people don’t understand money is just so completely incorrect, and frankly damaging. Poor folks understand money (and specifically, what it can and can’t do) better than anyone else on this earth.

His/her story wasn’t really plausible because if it was true parents would be the first to suggest and then do it.

My dad is not the type to do such a thing (neither is my mom). He’s actually quite happy that I finally got a phone and will stop asking him to buy me a new one

I don’t get the downvotes. It’s sound advice. The phone is a depreciating asset and while I get the “status symbol” of an iPhone for kids, it’s just a phone. My first iPhone coincidentally which I also won in a company contest was an iPhone 4, before that I just used a Chinese knock off Nokia 6300. Priorities man.
