Yep, this is the culture I keep running head first into as I try to level up my career.

Bingo. They are breathtakingly low maintenance once you use them.
OP, use what you like, that’s the only trick. If you force yourself to use the “right” stuff, you will get annoyed and stop using them. Use them, find out what works and enjoy.
I started with a set of basic target brand non-stick. I mostly use cast iron and stainless steel now (been doing this for 30 years). I do keep a non-stick for eggs and such, but it’s the least used pan I have.
Right, I subconsciously rip off all my tags and even try to buy things without them… I always figured they were meant to be removed because they are so annoying.

Best site on the internet. I was so worried when flash died, big sigh of relief when they went html5.

I do use it myself (free tier only) but it’s out of ease and convenience. I’m ready to abandon it but I like the security it brings. My stuff is just personal garbage with no strict uptime requirement - if I lose public access I still have Tailscale and a VPN to my router as backup.
So, it’s a deal with the devil for sure, but it’s one I wore protection for when signing.
I just absolutely love this comment, especially the dismissive bit at the end. Damn fine nerding my friend.
Honestly, this factoid is the closest thing to a real Total Perspective Vortex that I’ve ever felt.

Fucking hell, I didn’t even notice the wig but here I am, fully clowned.

I work with John, my role is as the replacement for another John. I’m trying to be open and fix the issues, but they just want John back, and the other John who’s here, is so territorial, even when I try to help, he just tries to undermine and fight me.
Fucking John.

Oh, I agree, nothing wrong with mint. I just like the fact that the LMDE version is Debian based and works with everything I’ve thrown it at.
Figure proof of they ever decide to switch away from Ubuntu and mainline LMDE. Probably won’t happen, but makes me feel better anyway :).

Seconding LMDE. It’s Debian based rather than Ubuntu so no canonical to un-f. It’s my favorite distro. LMDE for desktop, vanilla Debian for servers.

LMDE for future proofing and stability. Sort of a comedy option, but it’s my distro of choice. As easy as Mint, as stable as Debian. I just don’t trust Ubuntu and since it’s a Debian based distro, why not take one more step…
I’m in the same boat. I love that it makes self hosting easier for me. It does what I need and even gives me a small extra measure of security. I admit, I use it because I’m lazy, I could do it without Cloudflare and do for some services. So, I figure if it truly becomes urgent or intolerable I can drop it from the stack.

It is now for me too :).
Nah, I mean that even thought they look so picture perfect, my brain just doesn’t see them as real, and parks them in the same category as a cartoon.
Whereas a practical effect, might look hilariously bad, but sometime a jello filled, papier-mache head exploding, is the perfect amount of gore to make me wince.
My theory is that since practical effects ultimately rely on physics of the world we occupy, that despite their unpolished look, they feel more real. The hyper realistic, but completely reality breaking effects of today just hit the same way cartoons do.
Speaking of cartoons, I love finding the shortcuts that animators would take, there’s something so artistic about how they did it.
I am just so much more engaged when I can watch a movie while also trying to figure out how they pulled off an effect.

I like ‘sloppers’ as a term for the morons distrubing and consuming the shit that the clankers are excreting.

I have noticed that some of the regular creators I watch seem to look a little AI lately. I honestly have been questioning reality a bit; that’s probably the point.
It’s ironic how so many of us find ourselves being extremely valuable for the exact reasons they can’t stand us. As IT, I’m used to being seen as nothing more than red marks on a budget to the folks making decisions. The only thing they hate more than listening to us, is when they have to.
Kinda got a chip on my shoulder today it seems.
