  • For the same adhd reasons I’ve tried to learn programming languages about 8 times a year since 2011 and can’t make it stick.

Ive got this idea for a pocket pet game that’s sort of a love letter to all those toys from the late 90s that never really hit their full potential. It uses qr and barcode scanning to generate loot, your pet can change species and color with your effort so you never have to replace them and you can customize them to your identity, it uses real world travel to generate battles, and you can battle other players locally.

The code scans would be used as a seed for a random table and then be account locked so every time you scan that can of soup you get the same item reliably every 24hrs. With the idea that dedicated players would collect the codes that they’d want to repeatedly use. Then when you meet other players you can scan each other’s collection to get a quick boost of loot, facilitating a reason for the player base to socialize.

I have dreams of making it FOSS, supporting its expenses with monotized cosmetics for sprites and UI with an open invitation for players to make their own cosmetics that they’d receive a 50% cut of the profits. If it ever got big I’d get modified versions of those dog tag engravers you see at tourist traps that would print out a token featuring your pet, your account name, and a one of a kind qr code on the back that gives a slightly better reward. I’d put these machines in silly places so the players would have a neat experience visiting them and a one of a kind physical reminder of the fun to show off to their friends.

I have the whole game complete on paper but I don’t know how to make it work digitally so I doubt it will ever happen.

  • It’s not one person’s data, that’s functionally worthless. It’s the aggregate data of a majority of the population that they’re selling.

Think of it like this, a survey answered by a single person doesn’t tell you anything. A server answered by 100 people is considered good data in research. LG claims over 240 million people own smart TVs or monitors globally, that’s nearly the entire population of Pakistan or the combined population of Texas, California, New York, and Florida, a survey of that many people is unheard of in standard research methods.

But it isn’t just one survey. Every ad you skip is a survey answer. Average viewing time, media genre or categories, preferred platforms, veiwer retention, time of day, number of ads you will tolerate, preferred volume, preferred content, preferred aspect ratio, preferred color tone, and on and on, and exactly accurate instead of the feeble self assessment of such. That’s not even including the verifiably proven things they pretend they aren’t tracking like every conversion you have in range of the remote.

Your specific data is relatively worthless, but as a datapoint in a chart of 72% of the population of the United States, that data can be used to change the information landscape of the world.

  • I experienced 4chan at the tail end of the unmoderated era. Pedobear was a lot more than that. A good deal of the actual meme posts had openly sadist and rapist tendencies, but the vast majority of pedobear images I encountered were just the bear to advertise a thread of csam, the bear to shorthand calling someone a pedo, or the bear to shorthand pedophilic thoughts about someone else’s post. On a rare occasion, there would be csam with pedobear images for censorship to advertise a seperate website. It’s no wonder the darker parts could be missed or have been scrubbed from the internet.

As much as I relish the golden glow of the frontier internet, we can’t let that glow hide the rot that was truely there.

  • I put my pc together back in 2019 with the plan to upgrade individual parts over the next 5 years. Time rolls around to get a graphics card and they skyrocket. Time rolls around to extend the ram and they skyrocket. I’m so fucking pissed that this extremely reasonable and well thought out plan that I managed to make, one of very few that I managed to make before getting medicated, has been upended by forces that are both far beyond my control and also stupid.
