Agreed. The hardware was essential in my journey. From a pi4b to a second hand mini pc to a small cluster with added cloud storage. I had to figure out a cheap and sturdy setup for reliant self hosting.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the best food you're had in another country that's not from that country?
1·60 minutes agoPizza in Austria. From a shed, somewhere high up in the Alps. No inside seating just a guy selling street food pizza at freezing temperatures. There were plenty of people standing in line in the snow so I figured it should be good and my goodness it was.
Fair enough. Austria is right next to Italy so maybe it doesn’t really count?
It’s periodical event where people bring their broken appliances and skilled volunteers sissy in repairs. Only cost are the parts. And, of course, I’m Belgian. There will be beer but drinking isn’t the point. It’s a social repair event.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When other countries say Americans are loud, what does this mean?
1·6 days agoI’ve been camping my whole life. Had several occasians where Dutch people dominated the soundscape.
I mean, it’s generalising. You should take it with a grain of salt but I’m not the only one who has noticed.
I thinks it’s always what you compare it with. I’m Belgian. Dutchies are they loudest neighbours and being able to understand what they say perhaps makes me tune in.
I’ve noticed my Spanish relatives are even louder.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When other countries say Americans are loud, what does this mean?
21·10 days agoPeople from the Netherlands are loud too.
It’s something about when you guys walk around in a larger group. Most of you just have a higer volume setting. Like you are trying to get heard by every bystander as well. When hiking through the Balkans I could hear Americans from far away.
Australians seem te be loud as well so you’ll be fine I guess…
But who’s generalizing?

9·10 days agoYou should read up on how the nazi’s operated the most succesful industrial size operation for genocide while most of the people tried hard not to notice.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•In the US, why doesn't a personal savings account make more sense than health insurance?
6·11 days agoExactly. Health insurance covers more than I could ever save. The fact that we all she pretty well means that well need more medical support for a longer time when were old. Once your personal savings account is empty you won’t have acces to expensive treatments anymore.
The more people buy in to healthcare, the cheaper the individual cost gets.
I’ve got wrid of my car. Saves me about 400 euros a month and I lost a fair bit of weight over cycling the past 5 years. I even save more time by not getting such in traffick than I’ve lost by being a bit less mobile.
I don’t really agree to spending in cash. Social workers around here teach people how to work with budgeting apps. There are service that connecties to your bemank account to give you an in depth analyses of you spending.
Preparing your own meals and fixing broken stuff are great advises that have saved me tons. If you can’t fix stuf by yourself you could reach out to repair cafés or likewise initiatives.

Yes
And are you selfhosting and have them join you or how and where do they get their accounts? When the encryption keys don’t sync, who’s doing tech support?
I mean, my mother is 78. It’s all kind of challenging.
Better at connecting with the people in my life, the people that I want to stay in touch with on a regular basis.
Why?
Belgium isn’t a country, it’s an experiment. I love it. I wish we could just see our fellow countrymen as people who just want to have a stable and secure life but somehow we’re on this journey to split the North from the South for the last 70 years.
Life is good but we all struggle under the continued issues that are challenging the EU and the rest of the world. Covid, Ukraine, Trump,… They are pulling us down.
Being a Belgian is a privilege and I feel like all Belgians should realize that more often.
In stead of the Netherlands, give Belgium a try. Visit Gent, Bruges, Leuven, Brussels…
Somehow, I’ve got HR fighting for me. What a great country to live in.
I’ve been using 2 phones for 14 years now.
