This is a phase that most Linux enthusiasts go through at some point. It takes time to understand what a distro really is.
People see distros as being much more different than they really are because of the default settings between distros being so different from each other.
At the end of the day a distro is basically just a way of choosing which group of people you want to trust to package software for you.


You can always just use the version you have and run an update after it’s installed.

I have a few open source audio projects in the works myself right now. Aside from my own stuff, Fish shell has been my latest addiction.

Not really because these are open source projects. The one that is easier to develop for will likely get more features which leads to more users.
That being said, Java was a questionable choice IMO.
Honestly the fact that it has code that says “under condition X, don’t save the user” is concerning in and of itself. I wouldn’t trust this thing in the first place.
It’s interesting to keep in mind the basically no one who worked on that game still works for Bethesda.
