3·7 days agoOk for arguments sake then how much is actually tied to a person’s ability to self-respect and grow? I imagine it’s far less common than we may think?

Games@lemmy.world•What is a game you can’t understand why its so popular ?English
13·8 days agoI can chime in that for many people like myself there’s a catharsis from playing them. They’re an allegory for life and the struggles in it.
I am not lying when I say that Dark Souls changed my outlook on games as a lifelong gamer.
It’s not without its flaws but there’s something about a game that doesn’t hand you everything you need to succeed and does not get easier when you fail.
“Git Gud” is literally the mantra many of us assume because like life you need to learn to persevere or give up but the game gives you just enough to persevere. There’s a strong parallel with battling depression that this game just gets and gets it pretty much bang on.
It’s less a game, and more a work of art.

8·10 days agoBecause as humans we are insanely stupid. I think we all know the answer. Money is why Arizona. We don’t do what’s right. We do what is cheap and effective. It just happens that sometimes that is right too.

Honest question if anyone has tried this in that who I am when I signed a contract is not the same person as I am now therefore any contract should be invalid no? Or are we acknowledging that a “soul” supercedes everything?
It’s an interesting thing I’m sure someone has tried to raise with a lawyer. I mean eventually all our cells are replaced naturally in our body right?

Agree and despite what it may seem like it really is gradual right now. What people are avoiding (god the C level discussions I have been witness to is mindblowing) is the long term damage of their choices today.
The amount of times I have heard executive talks with “you know we both have kids around the same age what do you see this doing?” And they always wrap it with something positive. These fuckers most likely have their kids in private schools, not to mention their kids have all the connections these fucking parents can afford them.
In short the execs making the decisions have their heads equally shoved so far up their own asses they are ignoring the problems on the horizon.

54·13 days agoMy only complaint here is that there is a lot of very, very valid use cases for “AI” specifically “Agentic AI”.
We (including myself) may not like a lot of those uses because it devalues my fellow workers but it does not change the fact that it works.
The problem is everyone needs to be so goddamn polarizing and god forbid we have a mature honest discussion about the tools being built and how they are changing society as we know it.
We should be discussing and pushing for UBI across the world for decades now as youth unemployment is already at dangerous levels in continents like Africa (lol of course we don’t care because black people) but no instead we have asshats pushing a narrative of “AI bad”. It’s not. It has many purposes. Smarter people know this and it’s why it isn’t going away and the train is not going to stop if you don’t pull your head out of your ass.

I can’t wait to dip out of society and find somewhere in the middle of nowhere to live a quiet life with minimal technology in my life. I’m done with all of you. I stand by what I’ve said to my mum many times over the years. I hate people. I love persons.
One cider does not a drunk make but one joint will get me stoned. 3 drinks a week at this point compared to a joint or 3 a day. Was a pretty big shift.
Sorry I should have quantified that younger than 30 to me was my childhood lol. I didn’t clean up until I had kids.
I envy you it reminds me of my childhood. I’m currently enjoying a cider taking a break in from the heat doing yardwork.
I use the old fashioned radio to find podcasts. I listen to CBC Radio 1 here in Canada which has programs they highlight random podcasts.
I listen to “The Bridge with Peter Mansbridge” daily because I’m a politics nerd. Highly recommend if you want insight on how Canada operates and how the world works.

1·19 days agoNothing changes until the government reprioritizes which system is in play and then it becomes a global problem. I think we both want the same thing, but the reality is we aren’t getting it until it gets much worse and/or blood spills and I have neither the capacity nor the appetite for either.

13·20 days agoBeing blunt. I am 48 and have 3 kids to feed and 2 have disabilities. I have no interest in the risk that comes with doing something pro bono on the hopes it will work especially when everyone else is doing it pro bono. There’s no immediate individual incentive.
I may want socialism but I live in a capitalist world. I can’t have me and my family survive on good feelings.
Having worms is common in poorer parts of the world and deworming humans is quite common. I imagine it’s made its way through immigrant communities and then white people latched on.
Something else white people stole 🤣

Amen. I told a coworker this in a meeting recently that I felt like the dumbest person on the call and I loved it. They’re doing development stuff I never would have thought in my dreams I could do and yet here I am lol
