Honest answer? I think the current US anthem is fine. Some would like it to be “God Bless America”, but I don’t care for the “god” reference, although it is a better song. Others would argue for “America the Beautiful”. The “God” reference isn’t as prominent in this case, but I think any reference to God is inappropriate in a supposedly secular society. A war poem set to the tune of a drinking song is both appropriate and the best we can do, imho.
True, but if the government is truly secular and the government chooses its official anthem, then it should be secular as well. And please notice that I used the qualifier “supposedly” in the post you replied to, and the qualifier “should” in this response, so I’m referring what would be appropriate in a secular society and not the dominant religion of the population and their influence on their government.
