Welcome to the beginning of the end.
This is why I don’t use it often.
Good riddance. I hate that so many communities moved from forums to using Discord. It’s such a ratty little pigeon hole for communications to go and get lost in forever. It’s a shitshow for anything other than instant, live messaging. And so many communities use it as their only real forum. The day that private equity and public investors liquidate the servers and sell off Discord’s IP after their future bankruptcy will be a very happy day.

That will be a glorious day!
Welp. If you didnt think it was starting to suck before
How exactly can they make Discord more shit than it already is?
Aah yes, the IPO… The first step towards enshittification.
No, the first step begins before, as the revenue must be as high as possible before the IPO. That’s what happened with Fuckit too.
… y’all mean it’s going to become even more enshittified?
They havent even started to be annoying about nitro yet
In the near future non-Nitro users will be quarantined to the nearest abandoned Google Blob Emoji server.
100%
oh baby it hasn’t even gotten started (relatively)
They’ve made many steps already
Great time to start looking for alternatives. Any suggestions?
Stoat (previously Revolt)
Matrix seems like the one with most potential to develop into a 1:1 Discord alternative.
Then you have XMPP, Mattermost, RocketChat, whatever Revolt.chat renamed itself into, etc.Matrix is stunningly unintuitive to use, sadly.
Matrix is a protocol with multiple options for front-end clients. If you don’t like Element, for example, you can try Cinny. They both use Matrix but are different apps.
That is a spectacularly bad name, lol
CalcKey? FireFish? Developers of Discord alternatives are just a special kind of person. Their efforts are commendable of course.
Which one?
What revolt changed its name to
Had to google it.
Dafuq is that xD
Depends what you use it for. I see people use it for group chats, video calls, and forums, all of which would have different replacements.
IRC
Can you share your screen on irc?
That’s way too fancy for irc, but good idea! I will think about how to do that. Would a single still pic be useful?
It’s common to stream gameplay to friends during a voice call. Sharing a single image doesn’t really compare
OK I dug into this. It appears this is most easily accomplished with Matrix, as it allows many-to-many audio chats. I asked for a quote. ;P
I was afraid you’d say something like that.
Dang – I have no idea how to address that…🤔
Alright, well I’ll keep thinking.
Thank you very much for the feedback.
No voice in IRC though
IMHO computers are made for text. As this comment illustrates.😆
That’s fine for some folks, but i game with friends a lot. So far discord is the easiest for that. Been researching alternatives for a bit and might go back Mumble, though
We have a signal group in my game group. Works really well.
Nice, that works fo voice for sure.
I would like to use now to remind the youth of today of the unending glories of IRC and we must return to it.
No voice, video, or game streaming in IRC though
I’m right there with you. I already hired a guy to make a WordPress plugin for it and also another guy to make an iPhone app. The former is done, the latter is nearly done. I’m adding a feature (as I am the product designer 😜) to do in-line images – IRC sorely needs that capability.
But yeah, both will be BSD, I think… Tho as I think this thru, I really don’t want to facilitate other end vitrification.🤔
It was a fun 5-6 years but I deleted my account and all my messages last year. That took a while even automated lol.
How do you delete all your messages?
There’s scripts you can run using the console on the browser version on Discord.
I’m not sure if it still works, but the one I used is https://gist.github.com/victornpb/135f5b346dea4decfc8f63ad7d9cc182
This one looks like the updated version: https://github.com/victornpb/undiscord I guess all you need now is something like GreaseMonkey or similar to run it, had to paste a big block of javascript before.I’m under no illusions that the data may still be in their hands but I guess it’s not outwardly visible? I only did it because I’m a little wacky.
Doing so is against the Discord TOS, but it’s basically running a Tamper Monkey script. I did this twice to delete all the messages I’ve sent to my ex.
If it helps kill the damn thing, excellent.
There goes the neighborhood.
Discord and IPO is like the knight running at the castle clip from Monty Python.
Constantly coming soon, but not arriving.
Until it is suddenly there, while you are unprepared to do anything about it.
“Hey …”
Edging?
We can only hope
Fucking shit
