My hope is to get a laptop at commodity mass produced prices, but where everything works flawlessly with Linux. I’ve heard that old thinkpads are the way to go, but I don’t really understand which models to look at specifically.

I don’t really understand which models to look at specifically. As long as it’s without NVidia graphics and WiFi/Bluetooth not by Broadcom, it should be alright.
