The rationale is interesting. I’m glad they kept the logo as it’s recycling ♻️
Went from a recognisable name, to one that’s you’d forget the moment you look away.
yeah that doesn’t sound like an operating system to me, it sounds like an AI startup company
This is a really directionless project, they haven’t got a single phone that they are willing to say this is the one you should get if you want to try this software. But they did spend a year and a half rebranding.
I want this to work but FFS pick a single device and complete it enough to show people a working OS.
Reading the article I can understand changing the name. Nura might even be fine.
That said, I do not at all understand going with a .eco TLD.
I immediately think it’d be some green venture or something or other. Even .tech or something else would be far, far better IMO.
They are supporting devices deemed obsolete by manufacturers and are working towards making your phone last longer, I would say that’s pretty environmentally conscious. The “eco” TLD makes sense, I think, when you look at their goals.
Interesting, I preferred the old name though.
The name is long and can be very hard to pronounce in many languages.
Who the fuck translates names? This should be a borrow word at max. Like, I would say
postmarket oh esorpostmarket os'(soft s), latter maybe more casually. I would NOT say “The after market operating system” in my language. If it’s implying some groups are incapable of pronouncing English in any coherent way, that’s just racist the way I see it.New proposed name:
Programs, Routines and Symbolic Languages That Control/Dictate the Functioning of Physical Equipment Directly Involved in Performing an Industrial, Technological or Military Function; Designed for Controlling the Allocation and the Use Of Various Resources of Such Physical Equipment to Tasks and Remote Human Users; to be Used with Including But Not Limited to Equipment Originally Manufactured for the Purpose of Being a Portable, Wireless Telephone, Which Changes Radio Connections Seamlessly During Travel from One Radio Reception Cell to Another Without Losing the Party-To-Party Call Connection; Almost Exclusively Subsequent to the Term of Sale of Said Equipment.
One just has to translate the whole thing and it’s fine, no way to mispronounce.
Many languages do not have the same set of sounds as English - a stereotypical example being Japanese, which merges L and R - and so words that use those sounds are difficult to pronounce
I still understand “postmalketos”.
Why? Why is everybody renaming their project after years of building up reputation?
From the rationale, the name PostmarketOS was too difficult for the average user to recognize and pronounce out loud, even when abbreviated to pmOS.
pmOS is a terrible shortening.
it’s also what peppermint uses in some places.
It also couldn’t be trademarked and was misleading for hardware like the PinePhone that shipped with the OS pre-installed.
I thought at first the name “Nura” was from Esperanto, meaning more or less “current” or “up-to-date”, but nope! It comes from the name for certain Sardinian buildings from the Megalithic period, “Nuraghe”:
Nuraghe - WikipediaThat’s neat folk etymology
That is… not a good name lol
https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nura_(Rapperin)
Will be a fun one on dupes
There are now 13 English Wikipedia entries for the word Nura. This is my biggest criticism of the name. I hope it helps the project. I want a Linux phone that can run native Linux apps by default (and a few other features).
At least it is the only software project so not technically a dupe
Yep, and allows them to trademark the name, which has some legal benefit.
a proposal of 4 names for the team to choose from. Those names went through further triaging to make sure it didn’t have very problematic connotations in as many languages as we could find speakers, from all continents. All of them passed the criteria
I don’t think she’s considered problematic.
I like the new name.
Plz EU or China or someone. Base your new cool mobile device OS on this so we don’t have to live in this duolopy of shit.
Nura is currently in the process of setting up a non profit to coordinate the development of the OS. One of the stated goals of this is to enable hardware partnerships, with German phone maker shift being floated as a potential partner.
Honestly fairphone would also be a good option. One of the most repairable phones, swappable modules (well, replaceable since nobody makes aftermarket modules), and they already have a history of working with 3rd party OS providers.
I have a tangential question. My understanding is that Google is requiring every Android app to be registered with them, and they’re going to start blocking any that aren’t. Are those apps going to continue to be installable on Nura?
they’re going to start blocking any that aren’t [registered]
This is not entirely true. Phones will still allow side-loading. You just have to jump through more hoops after the update.
Do you mean through Waydroid? Because that’s how Android apps run on Nura, out of the box it’s Linux and doesn’t run android apps
I’m sorry, I was mixing up Nura with GrapheneOS. Since Graphene is modified Android I wondered if there might be an issue. But since Nura is not Android my question doesn’t make much sense.
Totally fair, not super hard to mix up. To answer the question from what I’ve seen both Graphene and Lineage are not including the code to box out non credited apps. But they don’t have a large enough user base to keep the devs motivated if I had to guess
That’s not the reason. The app verification daemon is part of the Google Services, not of AOSP. Even if Graphene and Lineage wanted to ship it, they legally couldn’t for the same reason they don’t ship the playstore. But as soon as you install the playstore manually, which is possible, you’ll get the verifier service, too.
What you just said is impossible.
Android doesn’t have any google by default, so these installs can’t be forced by Google to do anything.
If anything, they will push more people to reinstall Android without Google, so they can install normal software on fdroid.
It only affects certified Android devices. Waydroid, GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, AOSP, etc. are not affected.
Google can only enforce this on devices they control. PostmarketOS is not Android. Even if it was - if I install an app through an alternative app store or install it via “sideloading”, there is nothing Google can do. Even LineageOS, which is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) won’t care about Googles new toy.
I like it!! There was a brand of headphones/earbuds/something named the same thing, that one of my partners really loved. They were really sad when it got bought out and shut down, so it’s cool to see the name go to something else that’s awesome.

The latter one is explicitly spelled on the main article, not folk etymology. The first one was my original guess when I first opened the article.
