Yeah, not exactly BIFL but I am looking for a 50+ inch plasma tv for semi-retro gaming. I have some consoles that I want to hook up and I don’t want to deal with smart bullshit. Does anyone have a recommendation? I remember Pioneer being really nice back in the early 00s but I never knew anyone who had one long term.
Didn’t plasmas TVs have a burn in problem over time?
I’m sure that’s one of the reasons they stopped making them.
Some of them had localized burn but from reading on it (quickly a few minutes ago) it seemed to go away on power off? I’m not 100% sure on that though. Its really only an issue olof you have static stuff like channel logos or tickers on the screen for long durations afaik.
I don’t think they make Plasma anymore? Either way if you’re trying to avoid “Smart” TVs I’d suggest looking into computer monitors instead of TVs, even the cheapest TVs sold today have “Smart” shit so you didn’t have a moment of peace in your life.
Yeah, I am looking for a used one but I don’t know what has held up or not.
The big display screens made for corporations are supposed to be high quality TV hardware minus the ‘smart’ features - if you can find a used one without burn-in. But I don’t know specifics for makes or brands, sorry. I get my TVs from ewaste so the goal there is mostly just to limp it along while ignoring whatever problem caused the original owner to throw it away.
I love my 46" Panasonic Viera. It’s my only TV.

Apparently some of these had power supply issues, but mine still works flawlessly. I got it second hand from someone who almost never used it. Everything works.
The only flaw: Panasonic built it to reject 1080p over component input. My PS3 supports 1080p over component, and the console believes it’s transmitting signal, but the TV rejects it and only shows a blank screen.
Panasonic cowtowed to the film industry, who didn’t want 1080p to be available without HDMI’s copy protection. So the TV blanks it out.
Probably not a huge problem for you, but worth keeping in mind depending on what you plan to hook up.
I wasn’t able to acquire one but can attest, with research I learned that the Viera is one of the best choices, if not the best, for the combined SD/HD compatibility of composite out, HDMI and (some models) SCART in, a large screen that complements any input, and a solid build quality that’s withstood time so far. The backlight might be a failure point, but despite its age isn’t impossible to repair.
I’ll add that I’ve successfully used my original NES and SNES on this TV, and they work perfectly!
I’d keep them both hooked up to it full-time, but my limiting factor is space around the TV, and not inputs.
Pioneer Kuro or Panasonic Z series.
No other contenders that I can remember.
I still regret not getting a Z series. My S series from 2008 is still cooking (literally) the basement.
You want a commercial signage display. They’re large TVs with absolutely no smart bullshit that are designed to be on for long periods of time.
Why plasma?
I am looking for a decent picture from the mid 00s. The color range and contrast on plasmas was excellent.

IIRC some of them will not complete setup until it has an internet connectiom.
And a smart TVOS just opens the gate to eventual input latency, chip overload and a worse experience overall. Best to go back to basics or stick with the new
That isn’t the only part of smart I don’t want. I am specifically looking for the older ui and setup for a more retro setup. On my other tv, I use a custom launcher and adbtv to cripple the smart functions but that isn’t what I am looking for here.
I also want the display characteristics of a plasma or hd crt.
