If you skipped Andor because of that, I’d highly recommend at least considering that one. I thought it was an incredible short series with fantastic writing, and that’s coming from someone who basically hates anything other than the OG trilogy.

I didn’t interpret their comment as suggesting that modern consumers would be familiar with a floppy disk, but instead was pointing out that regular consumers in the past often handled floppy disks, which made a good case for it being a common symbol at that time. However, since SSD’s aren’t used so commonly by average consumers, it may not make a good replacement as a symbol.

That would suggest that perhaps there is a more commonly recognized object that can be represented skeuomorphically. Off the top of my head, an SD card may be a good option.

A lot of consumers don’t work on their computers. They either bring it to a computer repair store or buy a new one if they don’t have a family member or friend who can fix it for them.

As for what exact percentage of people in the world work on their own computers, I’m not sure if that has been studied. PC gamers often build their own PC, but many may buy a pre-built instead.

I thought its discussion of how much Civilization focuses on conquest, colonization, and combat over most other systems, to the point of it becoming a bit ridiculous if you try to go pacifist, was interesting. The year it was written didn’t seem a detriment.

But another, longer-term issue, is that because they are proprietary, if they became quite popular, they would very likely be sold to either a competitor to shut it down, or enshittified by adding transaction fees.

As an older example, Paperback Swap was an incredible website where people could give away books in exchange for a credit, which could be exchanged with another user for their book. There were no fees taken by the website, the only cost was shipping the books via media mail (which was extremely affordable, as the books would be wrapped in printer paper).

Paperback Swap was, at the time, a very popular website, with over a million books available. I used the service for many years happily exchanging books.

Then it was purchased by Amazon, which saw Paperback Swap as a threat to their used book market. They immediately enshittified the app, adding transaction fees and requiring you to purchase exchange credits or ongoing subscriptions. Within a couple years the community was effectively killed, and now shambles on as a shell of its former self.

Free, Libre open-source apps are the only long-term refuge from the constant churn of enshittification, as the community can always fork it to prevent bad-actors and venture capital from corrupting it.

For those reasons, you’re likely to experience some pushback on them. We’ve been burned so many times :(

Flohmarket could potentially be an alternative, though I’m not sure if instances can be set up to be purely barter.

Kreia from KOTOR 2 really gave an astonishingly good performance, as did Bao-dur in the game game.

I was able to switch myself and my family to vegetarian thanks to how good plant based meat alternatives have gotten. If you haven’t yet, I highly recommend trying out Impossible meat products. Their burgers put in an air fryer are indistinguishable from real meat for me, same with their ground beef.

I’ve been able to cook all of my family’s favorite meat based recipes with impossible meat with no changes to the recipe, and all of them, who are life-long meat eaters, tell me they can’t tell a difference.

Yikes. I loved that framework trailblazed repairable laptops, but those responses are pretty bad.

Edit: it’s so much worse now. That thread is flooded with bad faith far-right assholes, who in another thread admitted to trying to silence dissent by reporting comments to get the treads locked, and one called for framework to ban discussion of this issue entirely.
