You know, I could swear you used to be able to pick countries in it. But all I can find now is kijiji.ca.

Don’t know where you are, but Kijiji is absolutely thriving in Ontario. My old man has about 40-50 items up at any given time, and has no problems finding buyers to rotate through his stock, and he is nowhere near a major population centre. I just looked at ads for a city centre and there is a lot available. It is definitely possible to work outside of facebook.

Unless you have an old system with a pilot light, you are probably dependent on an electric ignition system. Those have been the norm for a couple decades now for propane and natural gas furnaces.

For sure, most use oil or propane as a primary heat source when gas isn’t available. But those rely on both expensive fossil fuel and electricity to run, so a backup that doesn’t depend on either is handy, especially with all these once in a century storms we get every year now. Wood makes for a cheap, effective backup. Used to be so common in housing too. Now we just get gas furnaces and gas fireplaces for show. Still, I wouldn’t go out of my way to get a woodstove. I agree that a backup generator is plenty for most situations. But if you have an older home with a fireplace, keep a half cord around and make sure the chimney is clean.

As you reach city limits in a lot of cities, it is increasingly likely that you will no longer find gas lines, city water, or sewers. Having a backup heat source is pretty comforting. Much like you, I used to rely on just gas with a generator for backup, but I’ve experienced frozen gas mains, so I like having a woodstove and a couple cords of wood to burn as a backup source of heat. Plus it’s very cozy on damp, cold days, and nicer than the fireplace channel on Christmas.

I think you are right. I keep finding different ways they did it, so sounds like the 1800s was a busy period in the development of mirror technology!

Pretty sure they just poured silver nitrate over glass. You can still buy kits to do that to re-silver old mirrors for the original look. From what I can find, the layered ones were older, and they used tin and mercury which made breaking a mirror a rather unlucky event.

Still better than the Gwyneth Paltrow Oreos. Would not recommend.

I loved having hundreds of c64 games with no manuals. So with this one, we thought you needed to fly the plane out the only visible door in the hangar, which was the one the pilot comes in through, and it was barely bigger than the plane. Seemed impossible to line up. Not like you could look things up back then, and if you were lucky enough to know some friends who played it, they’d often have the same issue. Can’t get out of the bloody hangar. Then one day, one of my brothers puts his feet up on the computer desk and kicks the F7 key on the bottom right of the keyboard while I’m flying the plane around the hangar, and the wall opens up. Well, shit. From there, it was pretty fun to make the Zaxxon-like run to the Kremlin and then pick it apart with your RPGs. Lots of good memories of this one.

I’d watch it for the Europe-heavy soundtrack alone, but the film is a damned masterpiece.
