As someone who briefly worked in recruitment, the amount of people interviewed by people who have no frame of reference for anything about the job requirements is astonishing. Some people may say “but surely not for the high-level positions-” No. Especially for those positions. Because people like owners and c-suites want final say. And guess who knows nothing about these positions. Them. They literally hire presidents and vice-presidents based on vibe. Technical positions see a lot of this, primarily because even a bad interviewee is going to know more about their job than an executive whose primary job is the “idea and vision” guy. Just spit enough jargon, laugh at their jokes and you’re in.

For reference, that company had a head of maintenance who as a friend of a friend of the owners. He just delegated the whole time and hit on any woman he found half-attractive. Thought he was just an asshole until I heard that he had honestly asked a production manager which side of a tape measure was the inches and which was the centimeters. Guy gave a visual run-down on how to use a tape measure to him. The head of maintenance. And he said thanks, and that he’d post it in the tool shed for his staff to reference. It became clear that he delegated everything because he literally didn’t know about thing about his job. I would be surprised if he could point out a phillip’s-head. Apparently he had the same job at a nursing home before that. I shudder to think of why he may have lost that job.

A few months after he got inevitably let go, he delivered my dominoes pizza. I don’t look down on jobs like that, but that felt good.

When I was still in high school, one of the seniors I didn’t know too well did some hardcore bdsm stuff under a pseudonym and it got out to the student population. Can’t confirm but I think she was 18. I saw it and while it wasn’t my thing, it was absolutely surreal seeing her get whipped and brutally fucked. Even had an after-care section, which was a good sign. Looked like she enjoyed the experience. Unfortunately, this destroyed her school life, and her younger sister’s as well so they ended up moving. She was in drama, so it was expected for her to go into acting, just surprising what type. Hope they’re both doing good these days.

Honestly my regular 1080 only has trouble with a handful of really demanding games if I’m not too proud to bump down some settings. It’s put in over 1k hours in cyberpunk, so not bad

I stayed at a hotel in Vegas (of course) that had no doors on theirs. Just an open, locker-room-style shower. And the floor was barely level enough to not flood the bathroom if the shower head was pointed directly at the corner. It was not pointing the right way when I turned it on.

Mitten Squad. Guy popularized challenge runs with his fallout and elder scrolls playthroughs, and his deadpan delivery gets me every time. Unfortunately passed away after a long battle with alcoholism. I miss that dude. I don’t think he realized how much light he brought the world.

I mean, I see it as more like AAA games are dying. I’m honestly not sure if that’s the case, but I know my personal hype for any AAA game announcement has dropped considerably in recent years. And it’s not hard to see how that’s a culture problem at these huge studios run by MBAs not people who play games. A culture of “Your boss is right, don’t rock the boat” can be seen as directly responsible for enshittification when that chain of command ends at the CEO or CFO. Sterilization, over-monetization, and the general fight for survival studios face is at an all-time high from my memory. Was a time when I was psyched for a Ubisoft or even EA title. Now all they get from me is an eye-roll.

My guess is all this talk comes from numbers interpereted by marketing people and the visible death of a lot of staples gamers took for granted. Big studios making crappy games and wondering why no one is buying them anymore. No one is lining up to buy Madden NFL or Call of Duty. Frequent releases and the proliferation of GaaS means missing a title doesn’t exactly break your flow, just get the next one. Releases have no build-up, no spectacle, no real hype. Indies are popping off like you said, though. Idk, as much as the general player count has to have increased dramatically over the last decade or so, I also feel like the culture surrounding it has dwindled a bit.

I agree games are not dying, but there’s also a part of me that understands how you can look at the overall industry and see a noticeable decline. Not sure by what metric, but it’s there. Games with soul, and love put into them, works of passion that have a something to say, those are the gems i think we’re seeing fewer of, if only by volume.
