The actual HMMWV is actually a pretty cool and reasonable vehicle for medium utility tasks and off roading. What the Hummer became and what passes for consumer light trucks is ridiculous.

1·10 days agoUnless we really screw the pooch in 2028 we won’t get there any time soon. Another term for Maga could very well do it though, so possibly 2030?

01·10 days agoCorruption. It just so happens that the GOP is so corrupt it’s ridiculous. The Democrats are not immune to bringing grifters into their party. The entire upper crust of society runs just like the aristocracies we tried to leave behind.
Yeah. The humor in the military back then and now is best described as “It’s not gay if you say no homo!” And yet somehow also very homophobic. (Less so now than when I was in the army) It wouldn’t be hard at all to find a private flirting as a joke.
I turned 18 in basic training. You can ship to basic while you’re 17. And then go to a unit. You are not deployable to a contingency zone (the widest definition of “place you could be injured by enemy fire”) until you’re 18.
Later on we got a private who actually made it all the way to the unit and had to wait until his 18th birthday to join us on deployment.
Ironically that’s a good recruiter. Anything that looks like fraternizing with potential recruits outside official activities is a huge no no.
If you’d have joined then you’d realize your mistake. They just assumed you already had the same sense of humor somehow.
The recruiter lied. We believe you. But they lied to you.

36·4 months agoNo. The stove causes pollution. This is the same as smoking around children. And it’s not addictive. Getting rid of it should be easy.

51·6 months agoNah, then it just becomes a defacto situation of the content creation companies (Disney, Sony, etc) owning the telecom companies. So you will truly be a single content household, like a Disney Household or a Paramount Household.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you think **you** can become a benevolent dictator without ever getting corrupted or turn evil?
1·8 months agoSure, for the low price of a lifetime pension I’ll benevolently dismantle the oligarchy; ban guns; make cars luxury items; massively expand mass transit; and bring in universal health and education!
Just ignore the claims that I’ve actually jailed or killed my opposition; held the families of so called “freedom fighters” so they’ll turn themselves and their buddies in; made travel outside your area and healthcare impossible without government approval; and completely changed the history everyone learns.
Okay that’s obviously pretty extreme. Just a reminder that if you’re not careful even well intentioned dictatorships can be very oppressive. And every dictatorship is on a timer to a coup or revolution. And resetting that timer is not pretty. The only way off the treadmill is to have elections again.
The sheer amount of money being removed by the 1 percent is regoddamndiculous. It’s something like 45 trillion dollars since wages diverged from productivity in 1975.
It would require Apple to accept a dollar less in profit.
In this case there was no real issue. He was trying to get free advertising out of the court. But also, we’ve had animated avatars and text to voice for over a decade now. This isn’t an AI use case.
Nope, participation in a system that’s forced on you isn’t consent. But you can choose to do something to change the system. Get active, march, vote, organize.
Oh no. No. No. No. The players make the rules. Shifting focus to the game being bad is a deflection as old as time.

We really need to kick this idea that rich people are smarter. The vast majority were born on third base and think they hit a home run.
