Oh I’ve done exactly that. He (security chief) insists it’s required for SOC2 compliance, an assertion I’m leery of.

Browser fingerprinting is surprisingly accurate. Any other you site you visit which uses google analytics (which is like all of them) with the same fingerprint is then linked up, so voila the user is no longer anonymous. The categories that your site may be catering to are therefore added to the profile. Each page request on this site loads the font file again, adding to the perceived time on the site (that is, take last request time - first request time, now you have a pretty good estimate). The point is that while it’s not invasive and exact as running google’s js on your site, it does add to their user profile which Google sells to brokers and all that crap. My point being that they can gather a lot more info than one would think when only Google Fonts is used on a site.

At my job now, we have to change our password so often with such onerous requirements (16 char, alphanumeric, at least one upper case, at least one lower case, at least one symbol, no repeating characters) that I have to store my work password in my personal password manager with much more lax requirements. What the fuck kind of security is that?

When you use Google fonts, they track every request you send them, building profiles on your customers/users and selling that data. They are also able to know your complete visitor stats including location, interests, computer info, time in the site, and damn near anything else.
If you care about that, source your own font from your servers.

Part of a sales contract can be a rent-back for a period of time. You sell the house to the buyer, they pay for it, you get the money, and you rent it back from them for a few months or whatever. Everybody wins in this situation.

I actually thought of that meme when I posted this, was wondering if anyone would pull it out :)

Yeah, I hear ya. Any cardio exercise helps with that though. I like to hike on local trails at a brisk pace and I’m in a decent place there (not running any 10Ks though)

Ever seen a runner smiling? Me neither.

Did I not qualify it by saying I could be wrong? What is so confident about that? Jesus Christ, nobody asked you.

I believe what’s in the payload is not the same as what the user chooses to see. That is, it’s sent no matter what but the user can set what’s visible on the lock screen. I could be wrong though.

A notification doesn’t have to carry any data in its payload; Signal devs could take care of that.
Their refrain is always “if I could do it, anyone could”, as if to suggest that they just chose to be rich and it happened. Therefore, people who haven’t are “just lazy”.
I make pretty good money (not like THAT though) and I will say, you grow into your salary. Meaning, If I can buy the more expensive/quality version of something, I sometimes will. “Fuck it, I can afford it.” Then I’m shocked when people get by making much less. I understand that I’m relatively lucky. I wasn’t born into money but I know people who were and most of them are insufferable.
Chastises you for not remembering some data you handled 5 years ago

I’ve been around a long time, and I have bad news for you….

I hate to say it, but I’m with you :/
Euros (like Germans) use a comma as we use a decimal point. It’s why you see prices on ads as “€19,99”

So many parts in this article reinforced exactly how I feel about the state of things and what I’m doing about it.
No Twitter, no Facebook, never did Instagram or TikTok, no YouTube unless I need to fix something. My one online vice is Lemmy, which is nice because I run out of new content and am forced to do something else like read a book or be productive.
If I’m at dinner with people, phone goes face-down on DND. If I’m in a meeting, close the laptop unless I’m presenting or taking notes. I designate Monday and Friday “concentration says” and keep meetings to an absolute minimum.
It’s done wonders for anxiety and stress. There was a time when the smartphone worked for us, not the other way around. It requires a conscious effort, but it’s totally worth it.

Laughs in pi-hole

Launching on April Fool’s Day, chef’s kiss.
When I came back to school, I’d keep filling that McDonald’s cup at the water fountain to get maximum mileage out of it. Keep flexing that bad boy until the bottom soaked out.
