As someone not fond of Discord, it seems pretty decent and pretty Discord-like.

No. It is owned by a nonprofit set up for the purpose. The person that started it brought on a few volunteers (like me) to help out. We depend on donations, and receive some recurring and one-off donations. Every few months or so, we post a short request for more donations as the donations dip below the monthly costs, and that seems to keep us going.

I’m not sure exactly what you mean by “curates” / “shadowbans”, so I won’t directly comment on that. But a large part of the reason I was brought on was to have another person looking out for spam and such.

Every so often, I browse the media posted to the instance to look for spam. And sometimes that leads me to threads I’d otherwise miss - I had to see what this image was about in context! lol

Soooo… I occasionally monitor images posted to the instance and this one popped up and I just want you to know I had to go see where the heck it was posted and in what context. lol. So congrats on that. XD
