I saw similar images from guys trying to punch a hole in the wall in Germany like in the US houses.
That’s nuclear grade stupidity.
Literally the first rule of handling firecrackers is to not lit them in the hand until you 101% sure that you will have enough time to throw it away. And still it mostly applies to small ones.
So better to light them on the ground and quickly move you hand away, since even 4 inches of distance is much better than having point blank explosion right near your hand in case of firecracker malfunctioning.

A better question would be ratio of fingers to persons, because lost fingers ≠ lost hand, and the ratio would be more sensitive to changes

I hope one of these is my neighbor who was illegally setting off fireworks for 3 hours after the new year started.
