Come to think of it, I’m not sure if any multiplayer game stays that rich at high levels. Opponents are too unpredictable and do too much stuff; it’s usually more about keeping up with the meta.

Edit: Hell, real life is kind of like that. Maybe fictional chess is just unrealistic the same way as the story.
