I want to try self-hosting here at Lemmy, but I don’t know how, and I’m not sure if I have the necessary materials.
Look into nginx. See if you can make a basic webpage and access it from a different computer.
You will need to set up port forwarding, or use a VPN that supports it.
Good luck.
Step 1: Buy NAS.
Step 2: …
Step 3: Profit.
What do you want to self-host? Lemmy?
Yes
Lemmy might be a poor choice for a first project.
You need a static IP address and DNS. Then you need to follow instructions for launching and administrating the lemmy server online: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy
Check out !selfhosted@lemmy.world for questions about selhisting, and !lemmy@lemmy.ml for questions about running a Lemmy server
I’d recommend including a lot more details in your post about your machine, your budget, why you want to do it, etc
For necessary materials any old PC would work for trying it out. Old laptop, old desktop, whatever. Others linked the install instructions.
Running a full instance with active users is a different story, moderation and hardware upgrades become more of a thing.
