I so agree, when the threat is real the horror feels way different compared to fiction.
A lot of horror stories involve humans in positions of power
Yeah, but the ones in real life are more terrifying than the ones in any horror story ever told
“Humans are the real monsters ackshually” is a near-endlessly repeated theme in media, especially for example, a show like The Walking Dead where the real danger always seems to be other humans and the zombies are mostly an ancillary danger that humans learned to live/survive with in the world. It’s not that “humans are the real monsters” isn’t a valid and worthwhile position to take in your media, but there should be more interesting ideas that one can plumb out of horror, or at least that’s my opinion on it. Just seems like low hanging fruit type story to me.
The thing is that just because it’s true doesn’t make it a better story to write about humans in power instead of, say, a ghost that represents the spectre of chronic illness.
What makes a horror story compelling is a threat that is ambiguous, and ideally it remains so until the point of crisis.
Which is why one of the lagrange points of Comfort is Horror.
