Schadenfreude is a loanword from German. The closest word in English would be gloat. Schadenfreude has been detected in children as young as 24 months and may be an important social emotion establishing “inequity aversion”.
You look at it, and you think, if I stare at this long enough, I can make it out. Most of the words are about the same size, and there has to be some Latin bases here and there…

The Dutch word for it is “leedvermaak”, incidentally.
