Pewds has been dabbling more in Linux and engineering content lately, and considering he’s essentially retired and doesn’t rely on YouTube ad revenue anymore, wouldn’t it be amazing if he also started posting his videos on PeerTube in parallel?
He can definitely afford to support decentralized platforms and wouldn’t be held back by monetization concerns. With his reach, even just mirroring his content to PeerTube could bring massive attention to the Fediverse. Do you think he’d ever consider it?
He isnt a very social guy so he probably doesnt care to promote social media especially one with so much extremist content. His linux video is more than enough to funnel some more people into fedi adjacent communities and if they want to I’m sure they’ll find their way here.
Even if he did, look at the reactions in these threads. People dont want to grow this place.
PewDiePie posting on PeerTube will result with many of his videos being viewed on PeerTube. But either:
- he would make an instance only for himself and majority of his viewers would fail to make a Fediverse account to follow him, or
- he would open that instance for his viewers to make a account there, but then he would be liable for every comment made by his viewers, or
- he would make an account on already existing instance, making a great burden of moderating his viewers for existing administration and moderation team.
An entire network cannot be effectively marketed and accomodate a new users’ wave as well as any centralised website, like YouTube, or Bluesky.
he still has a following on youtube surprisingly on his vlogs, like 1+million views.
They can tell them to spread out registrations.
Im not sure I want to draw from PewDiePie influenced adopters.
This is called gate keeping
And I like it.
Fuck this guy. When I was growing up a group of skin heads infiltrated our local punk scene, even though they liked the same bands as the rest of us, we fucking ran them out of every show. Felix deserves zero praise for his recent moves.
Stop giving him your attention.
people still defend him like its nothing he fled to japan because controversy dint reach the country, he stayed off the radar him getting married is irrelevant when compared to what he did, and he dint officially apologize. basically pulled a sniperwolf, disappeared for a while and came back. im agreeing with you.
the issue is should people jump different platforms, because an influencer like him said so. and the other commentor said you should forgive him because it has ben 7 years, people dont forget hate attacks, especially if he has not felt consequences or amended his past. he just ran.
I remember him from over 10y ago when he played Amnesia and haven’t watched him until the linux video. What happened?
Please, no.
He is such a douche bag, and a lot of his fan base is too.

He can host his own instance, then you’re free to block it.

More so for being/cosplaying (same thing) as a fucking nazi https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/2/17/14613234/pewdiepie-nazi-satire-alt-right

“Kjellberg tacitly compares himself to Hitler, gives a Nazi salute, and shows a series of clips of Nazi imagery, including a crowd of Nazis saluting, Nazi soldiers marching, and footage of Hitler Youth.”
Yeah, if you don’t see “nazi” after that, that’s on you I think.

You seem to be holding onto a lot of hate for something a very different guy did 10+ years ago. He’s gotten married, had a kid and moved his family to Japan since his young edgy days.
He absolutely deserved criticism for the stupid shit he was doing when his channel was exploding, but I think holding onto that level of vitriol for this long isn’t healthy.
People are allowed to grow and change. Im sure you said or did some incredibly stupid shit in your teenage and young adult years. I know I fucking did. If we never allow people to grow and change for the better then we are permanently locking each person to their lowest point and holding them there forever. I think that is an incredible robotic and inhuman way to approach the human condition.
Yeah his fans are little assholes too.
Not liking someone is not a good reason to root against decentralized platforms, IMO. The entire point of decentralization is that nobody gets to control the experience and who is/isn’t allowed to participate.
I haven’t ever followed it. Do we know if him adopting Linux have an effect on his audience?
Idk about his audience, or if it’s because of my preaching, lots of my tech savvy students are making the switch to Linux or are at least gnucurious.
gnucurious
How long has “PewDiePie”’s linux thing been going.
I had a friend switch to linux about two years ago for no reason. And that friend is obsessed with pewdiepie. I hadn’t made the connection.
A few weeks ago, so Pewds probably wasn’t it.
There’s no way that it doesn’t
The last thing we need is more nazi apologists, let alone loud nazi apologists with a loud fanbase
Context?
He said the N word once when he got mad in a video game, and another time made an edgy joke. In both cases he apologized shortly after, and while I don’t even like Pewdiepie it’s a stretch to call him a nazi/nazi apologist…
He certainly was influenced by a certain political scene about seven years ago, parroting Ben Shapiro at a few occasions and featuring a lot of anti-sjw humour in his videos.
But that was seven years ago and he clearly majorly changed his views on his platform after the Christchurch shootings.
He is not a Nazi apologist at all lmao.
He paid some Indian guys in fiver to hold up a sign that said something like “death to Jews” or something like that. He didn’t think they would actually do it and he of course he laughed when they sent back the video of them dancing and holding up the sign.
When he got backlash for the “joke” by mainstream media he felt they were purposely twisting things around in a certain way to make him look worse and he was going to prove it. He then wore a British WW2 military officers uniform for a video where he claimed they would purposely cut the video to misrepresent things and that’s exactly what happened. They claimed he doubled down and wore a Nazi uniform because he was a Nazi.
Not long after that whole debacle he then had the infamous “bridge incident” where he called some random gamer the n word while he was live on twitch playing PUBG. He made an apology video after that where he said: “It was something I said in the heat of the moment. I said the worst word I could possibly think of, and it just sort of slipped out. I’m not going to make any excuses as to why it did, because there are no excuses for it.”
Absolutely worth being criticized for the things he did in his past, but I don’t think it’s fair to cancel the guy forever because of those things. Especially when it appears that he has grown up quite significantly since those days.
He paid some Indian guys in fiver to hold up a sign that said something like “death to Jews” or something like that. He didn’t think they would actually do it
Doesn’t matter if he thought they would do it. Just coming up with the idea is enough to make it clear that he’s a tasteless piece of garbage, and that NOBODY should be parading him around as someone to emulate.
People make mistakes. Some people learn from their mistakes. Some people learn from other’s mistakes. Some mistakes are so egregious, reflecting such abysmally poor judgement, that they should never be lived down, even if for no other reason than to serve as a warning, so that others may learn.
That dip shit has made a lot of those mistakes. He shouldn’t be in the public eye anymore. He should be a productive member of society working as an assistant to the junior manager at an obscure toilet paper company.
and he of course he laughed when they sent back the video of them dancing and holding up the sign.
You left out the part where he then published it for all of his followers.
In between having the idea that no respectable human being should ever have, to the point that he clicked “Publish” to send the video out to everyone, he had soooooo many opportunities for self reflection and a realization that that was a really fucking bad idea. Yet, he did it anyway.
He was making a joke of Keemstar’s extreme racism with the Fiverr thing. But it was memed by others and context was lost.
I’m not gonna bother arguing with you. We clearly have a fundamental difference of opinion when it comes to our ability to forgive past transgressions of others when we see personal growth and change from them.
Have a good day.
And that’s how you win an argument against pronazi idiot, with good old common sense
you wouldnt forgive someone for a past rape or murder would you?, and hate crimes is equally reprehensible.
… Are you seriously implying that SAYING SOMETHING HATEFUL is on the same level as physically violating someone???
I’ve been physically assaulted. I would choose hateful words every single fucking day.
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/10/09/magazine/PewDiePie-interview.html
Always cracks me up watching Gen Z froth at the mouth defending him.
Mass shooters believe he is a nazi. Sounds like the narrative got away from him no matter how much you parasocially defend him.
I’m older than PewDiePie. I have two little brothers that grew up watching him religiously so I ended up seeing a lot of his content and being looped in on his controversies.
What mentally insane people believe is completely irrelevant. Plenty of insane people have taken words of peace and love and somehow found ways to twist them into calls of violence.
Using mentally deranged peoples actions to blame a public figure is actually insane. Not once did PewDiePie ever make any calls to action and in fact he publicly denounced those people and what they did.
YOU need help.
Sure its us who need help, not you defending a nazi
Yeah it IS you people that need help. Because I’m not defending a Nazi. I am defending a person that made edgy Nazi jokes in their youth because I have enough brain power and human experience to know that not every single edgy teenager and young adult goes on to actually support extremist crap. It’s almost like humans spend their youth learning what’s ok in society. What’s not ok. Where they land on issues. Where other people land on issues.
What’s more important to me and most other humans is what kind of person someone is today. What kind of person they have been like in the last few years of their lives.
Every single human makes mistakes. How they learn from those mistakes is generally more important than the mistakes themselves (obviously not always the case).
Grow up.
Ok Im gonna write this again and this time read it slowly so you understand, hopefully. So according to you we need help for holding a person accountable for his own actions
Unless he joins fedia.io you don’t really get a say in what he does… kind of the entire point behind decentralization…
Tha fuck is a pewds?

Wasn’t that nazi stuff debunked?
I don’t see how switching country helps to run away from the internet.
Yeah, the guy never lived in the U.S. I don’t think.
asia doesnt care as much as the west about drama, hence he would be relatively unknown there.
You’re reading into this too much imo
I hope not. I hope that lemmy doesn’t grow any heavier than it is growing right now. The content is good, it’s enough, most threads have good comments. I don’t want this to become another Reddit. Lemmy is really good as is.
People singlehandedly supporting communities about popular topics might disagree
God bless those people. I hope for more like minded individuals to help them out, but I still would personally not wish for lemmy to have thousands of votes and comments per post. Quality over quantity for me personally.
We’re far away from thousands of votes and comments per post, don’t worry.
!fedigrow@lemm.ee is full of people trying to build communities about popular topics, only to be shouting into the void
Lemm.ee is shutting down
We’re well aware: https://piefed.social/post/834674
The issue is also partially that of those migrating to Linux from windows, in that they try to match their experience, ignoring all the other features they now have acquired. Communities will come organically, when there’s enough people to warrant them. Lots of tech communities as Lemmy users are usually tech affine.
It’s fine if there is not a subreddit clone for everything here yet. Maybe it will come, maybe it won’t.
The only way it’ll ever come is if the userbase grows.
Problem is a lot of people don’t remember early reddit it was the same way lots of tech folks then grew organic from there.
I hope that lemmy doesn’t grow any heavier than it is growing right now
I hope for more like minded individuals to help them out
How is the latter supposed to happen without the former? Like it or not, many of us are here solely because Reddit went to shit with their extreme monetization. Lemmy is still a really small community and absolutely NEEDS larger adoption in order to remain a viable option
This 100%, honestly what lemmy/mbin needs is a clean up of dead communities. That were created and abandoned during the reddit api exodus. As well as the active communities that are just a bot posting content from reddit and nothing else.
I think the software should start hiding/marking them in some way
I don’t expect they will all be deleted, and I don’t even think it would be good to delete them because there could be a chance they start getting activity
True i like your idea of marking them. Just when people join a community i hate that they have wade through a mess of discarded clutter. To find the good places.
Might be a good point to create a github issue for on the lemmy repository
Yep. I’ve said this before, but I don’t understand how a community that only provides links to external communities is supposed to help Lemmy grow, as opposed to taking people away 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah it’s like with the AI Gen posts. If they are not willing to put in the effort to post something real. Why should I put in the effort to engage with their content.
This please. It’s totally fracturing and also misleading, especially in cases when the dead community has the highest # of subscribers!
Yeah cause everyone joined but then abandoned their accounts we need a secondary value for date of last post
Same. Lemmy reminds me of how Reddit used to be ages ago. Discussions are actually elaborate and thoughtful. The quality of content is so much better. I fear if Lemmy gets too big the quality of content will decline
than it is growing right now
it’s not really growing though, if you look at MAU it’s shrinking
we had a big bump at the end of March but we’ve been shrinking since then
Nothing would help peertube because the quality of content get better. People will quickly leave peertube
PewDiePie built his fame and fortune on a centralized platform.
I am not certain whether he will see the benefit of a decentralized future beyond dollar signs.
Happy to be proven wrong.
I mean, there’s been a lot of Youtubers who move to Linux and then eventually get interested in FOSS and all of its related stuff (like Fediverse) stuff so it is possible. This would be the first time someone on PewDiePie’s level has done it though so who knows.
