I’m afraid that in the future, making money online will become impossible or risky due to competition. The reason is that algorithms will only promote corporate content, and AI moderation and algorithms will monitor everything. The dead internet theory is no longer a theory, it’s almost a reality.

ITT: People asking whether AI “can do” your job, as if that’s the same question the bosses are asking.

Bosses are not trying to replace 30 workers with 1 person using AI in order to get the job done.

They’re replacing 30 workers with 1 person using AI who will ultimately fail to get the job done, because it’s impossible to thoroughly review 30 workers’ worth of output. Then that 1 person takes the blame, gets fired, and replaced.

AI cannot successfully replace workers. But it doesn’t have to successfully replace them, as long as it can profitably replace them.

Ok but 1 person can often review at least 2 people’s worth of work and that’s still half the workforce. Why would we only care in your hyperbolic example of 30x reduction and not 2x reduction?

if AI can replace you, you either weren’t that important or your company is so profit driven that they just didnt care.

the latter one would’ve gone to shit sooner or later anyway

Have you SEEN the work that AI puts out? If anyone is getting replaced by something that hallucinates basic, trivial things, then your job wasn’t exactly secure in the first place.

Have you SEEN some of the decisions made by managers and CEOs? Just because your job was actually important doesn’t mean the people who are eliminating it appreciated or were even aware of that fact.

It takes years for a colossus to collapse even after its heart has stopped beating.

It takes even longer for it to realize that it has died.

Oftentimes the crows are picking its bones before it closes its eyes for the final time.

I hope the machines that kill the internet will post messages warning each other about the danger of humans taking it back and refer to it as live internet theory.

Ahah, perhaps, but corporations are more important than government and reach for the stars, despite the end of civilization, so this is possible.

I swear, the online AI haters think AI is so much cooler than I do.

I get crap for being on the fence about it or for saying it’s useful for some stuff, on interesting on principle. They’re out there being exactly as bullish about its capabilities as the shills who invested retirement money in Open AI and are terrified it’ll all blow away.

Come on, that’s such a horrible take. People love to shit on customer service jobs, or editorial services and cast them aside saying AI will flush them out.

But now try to use a company’s helpline or trying getting a serious piece of literature copyedited and it will be one of the worst experiences you will have. AI technically “does their job”, but it is so shitty.

But that is what they said i believe. If AI can do your job. In your example this is not the case.

People on helplines are just reading scripts and following prompts anyway. They’re likely less useful than AI since AI isn’t going to get grumpy because it hasn’t had a Snickers, or be distracted by their plans after work / the hot new staff member in Accounts or whatever.

I’m all on board with AI replacing roles that can be simulated with IF… THEN statements.

Feel free to use the company branded chatbots as your single source of customer service and technical support. I’ve been trying to get them to provide help on so many occasions, but I’ve always needed to be connected to an agent.

It’s not like they actually let you pick something meaningful just because you want to. If I automate mechanical turk and am replaced I’m sure they have something else just as meaningless for me to do
