Hand painted pictures of videogame scenes are actually legitimately fascinating to me. Like, from an art criticism perspective I think they’re really cool. A team of developers and paid artists created a virtual world and then a player enjoyed frolicking on their finished canvas, as that first layer of artists intended. The player had an original experience that was impactful enough for them to interpret that experience - Which didn’t actually happen in the physical world - For yet another audience, in a distinctly physical medium, in a style that inevitably blends the representational visuals of the game with the player-cum-artist’s own stylistic quirks. For a game like minecraft, the output looks like it could have come from the cubist era. Picasso or Dali would have probably been fascinated to see this. Magritte would be shocked. Ce n’est pas un portail. In a way, a painted representation of a video game makes the video game actually feel more real. I know that place. I’ve been there.
When the aether mod was new, modding was not very mainstream for Minecraft yet. So many many many people have the shared childhood experience of seeing videos of the aether mod and not even knowing it was a mod. We all thought it was a hidden feature and tried making the portal which of course never worked.
Very similar vibes, just a different generation of kids. I would put money on their being another one of these things happening right now that we will find out about in about 10 years :P

I know of aether mod but I don’t understand the mechanic here. Or is it just building the portal and not having the mod installed?

lol that gives me luigi in mario 64 vibes, but if someone went back in time with a romhack to ‘prove’ it
