I try to give the most grace possible. I’ve only ever blocked two users here. That said, I’d totally understand why someone might block me.
Just some bots. Any human user that needs to be blocked is going to get themselves banned anyway, so they’re already going to be spinning up new accounts and instances to keep it going.
Unlike on Reddit, here you don’t actually block someone. You technically mute them for yourself. So muting a bunch of bigots/trolls/spammers etc is a not big a deal.
i never blocked anyone on lemmy, i think you’d need to actively seek out to harass me to get me to block you.
blocking someone about a disagreement in a silly internet argument makes the small fediverse even smaller for me. maybe the person i argued with while i was on the toilet has the worst political takes but they post beautiful art i wouldn’t wanna miss, that kind of stuff yknow.
i also like drama and some people just like to be constantly wrong or deliberately agitate, which is rather entertaining 😈
I only blocked one person so far, mostly I just tag people instead of blocking them. A lot of times when you get attacked its just somebody super passionately defending whatever it is, or mistaking your innocent question for the opening salvo of bad faith arguments.
If i see a tagged guy causing chaos every time I see them I’d probably block them.
Do it sparsingly, if you don’t want to create your own little echo chamber.
I do it mostly for bots/shills i’ve reported.
I’m lightning fast the moment I realize someone is only looking to either
- be toxic, or worse
- waste my time, troll me.
For the rest I don’t block individuals, nor instances (I can have issue with people, but I don’t want to condemn the entire population of their instance).
I don’t think I’ve blocked anyone. There are plenty of users I disagree with on one point or another, but I like being exposed to different perspectives. I have to admit, I even like reading a spicy comment section sometimes (and by the up/downvote ratios on some threads, it’s clear that other people like reading them, too, even if they wouldn’t say so.) I know I’m not the only one breaking out the popcorn when I see a bigot getting torn apart in a comment chain.
If somebody seems to be trolling, I report them. But there seems to be a pattern of some trolls making accounts to spam, getting blocked by mods, and then popping up with a new username, so I don’t see much point in blocking individual accounts.
I’m far more likely to block communities. Not because they’re upsetting or offensive or anything, but because I either don’t care about whatever its topic is, or I don’t speak the language it’s written in.
I’ve only ever had to block spammers on any Lemmy-like platform. Users tend to be cool and I try to give people grace for being awkward and weird because… I’m awkward and weird.

You can’t see them, that’s the point. You block users, comms or instances you don’t want to see on your timeline.

Strong agree. If blocking also means they can’t see your posts or comment on it, then that becomes primarily a way for trolls to attack and block anyone who disagrees with them
That’s not it because it’s not about deciding for others, but about deciding for your own posts. I should be able to decide on my visibility.

Where do you get the idea that it is at all possible to stand up on your soapbox in the town square, addressing every Tom, Dick, and Harry, yet keeping certain members of the public from hearing your speech?
When I logout of my instance, you can’t distinguish me from any other anonymous user. I’m part of the anonymous masses. If you want to keep me from seeing your content, you can’t post it for the anonymous masses to see.
Facebook (and other proprietary, centralized services) give the impression that this can be done, but the way they are doing it is by refusing to show content to anonymous users. You can’t do that with federated services.
You have control over your visibility, anything you don’t want people to see, you don’t put in the internet.

That was a late-stage enshittification; it’s only been that way for a few years, and it was primarily used to suppress dissent.
It is absolutely not something we should be porting over to the fediverse.

Well idc about the semantics, the fact is it is useful and there is a good reason to use it. Personally I think the “they can’t see or reply to you anymore” style of “block” is super toxic and Reddit switching to that model was a major factor in its decline. It is very easily weaponized and basically amounts to giving powerusers moderation powers. If someone who makes a lot of popular posts or top level comments blocks you under that model, that instantly limits your ability to participate, and no one ever gets to know this is happening or to what extent. The most obvious way this gets abused is by commercial spammers trying to monopolize relevant subs by blocking everyone who may call them out or post competing content, but it also shuts down disagreement and debate; if you have something controversial to say and don’t want it to look like any good objections exist, you can just silence your best critics. It also gets commonly used by people right after they write an inflammatory reply to ensure they get the last word.
