Legally and historically that is often how the comma was used, and it is grammatically correct usage.

At least in English, commas aren’t magic sentence separators; you might wish to look into the semicolon for joining independent clauses.
They can be used similar to parentheticals to break up large, complex thoughts and format them as a single sentence. Legally and historically that is often how the comma was used, and it is grammatically correct usage.
I suppose it depends upon said genie’s views on prescriptivism, heh.
