What most say is with stew you start by braising meat in pot, then add other ingredients and stock. With soup start with stock and add ingredients. Edit: out of order
You drink a soup, and you eat a stew.
Maybe true for some soups but you might choke drinking chicken noodle, clam chowder, or wonton soup.
Then clearly, chicken noodle soup is a stew. /j
