  • Multiple times.

    • Driving to the wake for a recently deceased friend, had been stopped at a light. Light goes green, and as I put my foot down to move, I hear her voice yell STOP. I take my foot off the gas, driver behind me honked as a truck blasted through the intersection, easily going double the speed limit. I went through the intersection, pulled over and had a small panic attack. The car that honked was someone also going to the wake, their been telling the close call story as I pulled into the parking lot. They maintained the truck came out of nowhere, had I not stopped I’d have been t-boned from the driver’s side.

    • Travelling solo around Europe. I was in Germany, and due to go to the Netherlands to visit family. I’d given them my itinerary, so they knew my arrival time and didn’t have to worry. (Oma was delightfully fretful for me travelling alone.) When I got the train station I was uneasy waiting for my train and after a bit of indecision I hopped a train that went left earlier and took a longer, more scenic route. Arrived at my Oma’s to a full house of aunts, uncles and cousins. My originally chosen train had derailed.

    • Driving the highway southbound on Vancouver Island, leapfrogging with three other cars. Had the sudden urge to get off the highway, and found this delightful little place where I had some lunch and relaxed. Got back on the road, and traffic was barely moving. After a while, drove past a three car wreck, the cars I’d been leapfrogging with earlier. It was ugly and I learned later there were fatalities.

If I have a sudden urge to do something other than what was planned, I listen. It’s served me well over the years.

For me it’s too much sound input makes everything resemble the Peanuts adults talking.

One person talking is ok, two people talking is harder, three is pure white noise.

Drop music or environmental sounds on top of it and I can’t understand a damned thing.

I’d prefer text over audio, so long as I can skip the text when I am done reading. (Grr argh to the games that have both, but won’t let me skip because the NPC isn’t done speaking.)

Being able to choose either as the primary information delivery would be fantastic.

Launching a new game shouldn’t shake the house. I shudder to think how loud it would be if my system volume was above 30%. I made the mistake of having a headset on when launching a new game, and the headset learned to fly.

A couple games are still loud even after setting game volume to less than 10%… They get the full mute treatment, I no longer care of they have the most amazing soundtrack, I value my ability to hear.

In a similar vein, games that have sounds for everything. I have to play with sounds off in games I enjoy, and some sounds are used to foreshadow dangers that I end up unaware of because I can’t deal with the sound of crickets or bees or a random humming that are always present. (Shout out to Satisfactory for the incredibly granular sound control, overwhelming at first, but once it was set up it is great.)

Remapping keys. I have function (and not always voluntary) but no feeling in part of my left hand, and an essential tremor that appears randomly. I need to disable some keys because I will find my character suddenly crouching/running/attacking or whatever at really inconvenient times, and with some games the controls are so touchy that I can’t aim or move in a straight line.

Not colorblind, but some games have some very headache inducing colour choices, I have sympathy for those who can’t see colour A font on Colour B background.

  • I was working in a photo lab when it came out as well. The movie accurately portrayed (imo) how uncomfortably close to how involved one could feel when dealing with long time customers, even in a high volume lab where we rarely dealt with the customer. We’d see first dates engagements, weddings, kids being born, and so forth. Plenty of stories of ‘I saw Customer at the mall, had to stop myself from waving and saying hello and asking after Event’.

It’s not really much different from today’s social media and how involved some get in the lives of people they’ve never met or don’t even know they exist.

It made me double take on Robin Williams. I’d always seen him as Mork from his early career. I expected him to be over the top and funny, so watching him be serious and frankly disturbing was as confronting as the movie itself.

The problem with some succulents is they will appear alive, but actually already have one foot in the grave. It laying down without any grip into the soil might mean the taproot is gone.

When you repot it, take your time, and check that it’s tap root is intact. It’s ok to let it sit out in the open for a day or two - any damage should scab over. (And after repotting, let it alone for a week or so before offering it a drink)

If there is a taproot - you’re good to go, but if there is little to no root, chances are slim it will survive. There are methods to encourage a new taproot, but that is (currently) above my knowledge level. (AKA I’ve never been able to get them to grow a new taproot.)
