Mine is a mix of the following:

  • Description of the route they take
  • Some specialized function
  • Some title based on their design (GettingRailed and CryoBaby, for example)

I like using icons to cram in as much information as possible, and I usually have a specific schema that can parameterized like: ship class ship number ship name route overview primary cargo

So for I-Class #03 (codename Instigator) distributing logistics (belts, inserters, roboports, etc.) from Vulcanus to other planets: [virtual-signal=signal-I]03 Instigator [planet=vulcanus][virtual-signal=right-arrow][virtual-signal=signal-each] [item=express-transport-belt][item=bulk-inserter]

…where (letter)-Class is a blueprint for a ship shaped like (letter). In my current playthrough I started with the stationary F-Class for space science, then made the meager M-Class to get me to Vulcanus and Gleba, then made the I-Class when I unlocked advanced asteroid processing for proper item transport. I’m planning to make a larger Z-Class for going to Aquilo, and possibly a long-haul J-Class for the solar system edge and shattered planet.

I’ve started using icons instead of words.

The ship exporting from Vulcanus has the Vulcanus planet icon.
The ship bringing Gleba science has the Agricultural science pack icon.
My personal transport ship has the car icon.
The platforms that just sit and make carbon or calcite have their orbit planet icon, then their resource icon.

I have previously used sci-fi ship names, but quickly ran out of ideas.

    Ship names
    Ship Used for
    Daedalus Nauvis export
    Serenity Personal transport
    Wheatley Stationary space science
    Voyager Promethium harvesting
Saratoga Biter egg transport to Gleba
Red Dwarf Firing nukes* at asteroids

    * Singular, unintentionally
