I want to know where they think this will go, because there is an obvious and looming problem: the content–the library–wasn’t made or at least hosted for free.
Somebody set up a website to host the interactions between people who knew things and people who wanted to learn things. The people exchanging information often got as much as they gave, and the person hosting the forum typically sold ads or information about the people participating in the discussions. The result was a virtuous cycle where content gets made and everyone is happy.
Now all those sites are scraped, and their information is regurgitated by slop bots into a “zero click search” where the creators of the information have no role, the seekers of information never encountered the source, and the hosts never get their slice of the pie. OK, well that works for now, but what about when something new is made and there’s no forum to talk about it because all forums get scraped into the slop machine? How will the slop center learn? Are we supposed to expect the AI companies will spend time meticulously testing how best to DIY a mass spectrometer or whatever?
This is particularly, transparently obvious for news sites. News is worthless if it is old. Yet still AI literally reads the work of journalists and then cuts them out of the equation, denying the journalists the revenue that pays them to produce the news. Its like the scorpion and the frog.

Here’s the best part:
They spent trillions building a product worth billions. They don’t even get a moat of it either. All their competitors are perpetually 6 months behind, so they have to keep spending billions more just to keep their heads above water.
Their only hope is to trick the government into regulatory capture so they can finally get their moat. They aren’t even profiting from inference though, so they’re going to continue burning runway.
I don’t disagree but I’m curious what government regulation can do to create that moat? What are they trying to get out of the recent fearmongering, I can’t figure out what the end goal is
I think it’s to put a regulatory limitation on local run models, these frontiers companies might argue that such a technology which can be self run by a regular user would be disastrous and they want the government to regulate the release of these local models cough Chinese distilled models cough, hence regulating every other new ai companies. Oh these American companies are exempt because they are the moral companies who would never do anything disastrous.
So it’s kinda a way to snuff the small competitors companies so they can slow down their cash burning (they need to throw in millions every day to keep ahead of the local models) so they can at last finally raise price for their products since there is no competition. So basically it’s a fuckin cartel that need government help to make profit
Is the same thing that happened to academia. The people submitting papers are paying for the privilege, the people reviewing them are volunteers, and the cost to read them is out of reach for many. The people making money are just maintaining the website.
Couldn’t this easily be solved by one university building a platform?
I understand there’s a need to verify people actually are who they are and have credibility on the topic they review.
So starting out utilising uni logins or something alike, and you’ll have all university professors included

I just reviewed a paper for a major journal and felt bad for participating, but what else are we to do? Submit everything to arxiv, but when asked to review, seems you should review

Even worse. They destroyed the library and are now charging people money for telling them what was in those books, often providing an answer that is incorrect.

This is disconnected from reality. The “library” is still there and still free. No one is charging anyone admission. They’re charging admission to a different transformative work based on that library, but you haven’t lost anything you had before if you refuse to pay.

Hard disagree, as there is no way to effectively filter the genuine content from the AI produced slop, you end up wasting your time trying to find any genuine information, and the problem with generative AI being used like this is that it effects literally every topic you could ever want to search for a topic for, niche legal questions? Gardening question? Medical question?
AI generated websites now fill up most results obscuring you from even finding that original “library”
And that’s not even addressing the fact that anyone who isn’t as savvy at spotting this stuff ends up falling for it
I often go down YouTube rabbit holes for different topics: Warhammer 40k, film making and critique, video game development history etc. Once upon a time I’d find a good channel or two and binge them but now there are so many AI channels that feed off legitimate creators and smother them that I have to check that a source for a video on servitors in the 41st millennium is made by an actual human.
AI isn’t just harming serious legitimate topics of discussion but even niche hobby content. It’s why I value the creators I’ve followed for years even more now than ever.

They aren’t even charging admission for that. Most of the apps don’t charge for basic information queries, eg. Google AI overviews, they charge for token intensive agentic workflows.
Also open source models exist too.
