Oh my fucking god 😭
Because they understood that diminishing others doesn’t actually make you bigger.
It can’t possibly be that. Have you read any of those old magazines?
While beeing Playboy of course, Playboy has always done many things right. Robert Anton Wilson and Hunter S. Thompson wrote some of their best pieces for it. And there are many more writers who wrote pieces jokes etc. That where ahead of their time, for Playboy.
Hef might’ve been a misogynistic lecher but Playboy was publishing progressive think-pieces a looonnng time before a lot of other more mainstream magazines.
They had a shockingly respectful interview with Wendy Carlos right after she came out. They were generally a very socially liberal publication that used porn to fund the writing and the platforming of more controversial and radical topics. My mom was a subscriber despite not being attracted to women.

Getting bottom surgery in under a year? Good for her!
Yeah 😔
The company and its founder are problematic, but not only have they had good journalism, Playboy has always skewed towards progressive socials issues from what I’ve seen. Their first trans centerfold (that they/we know of) was in 1991.
The first trans woman in playboy was in September 1991. The first trans centerfold was not until November 2017.
Oh shit I didn’t know they’d had a trans centerfold, I knew they were progressive, but I didn’t know the progressiveness ever extended into the porn part
What exactly is a centerfold?
An early 80s hit song by J. Geils Band.
When making magazines you’d print long sheets of paper on both sides, lay them together in the right order, staple down the middle, and then fold the whole thing afterwards to make a booklet.
This means that all of your two-page spreads would be on the front of one page, and the back of the next page. All except the “centrefold”, where the staples were, that was printed on one continuous sheet of paper. It would have been the bottom of the stack, before you folded it into a book.
This meant you could pull that single sheet out and it would essentially become a poster, and so many magazines would print big images in the centerfold with that in mind. It also helps that the center of a binding like that it is easiest to flip to, it’s where the pages naturally want to return, so it helped to put your biggest attraction there.
If you’ve ever seen the trope / gag where someone is looking at a magazine, and then they turn the magazine sideways to oggle it, chances are the joke is that they’re looking at the centerfold, and turning it sideways because this particular image is sideways because the poster is printed to be hung up in portrait orientation.
So anyway, because it was such a main attraction for a magazine, and in particular was a kind of artifact that might live on a wall beyond the normal life of the rest of the magazine, it was considered very high status for a model to be featured even once as the centerfold.
Stolen from TV Tropes:

That cigarette centerfold is hilarious, what’s that from?!
Oh, you probably picked it up, but to be absolutely clear, referring to a person as “a centerfold” is basically short for “a model featured in a picture featured in the centerfold of a magazine”. Which, again, was a high honour in the field.
my blood just ran cold

Hey, at least young people have ‘zines again!
One of my local libraries has a little shelf set aside for local zines. It’s so fucking cool, I’m glad they’re making a comeback.
I do believe it’s the name of a stand in Jojos. (/s)
EDIT: Oh wait. It’s the user’s name. Not the stand.
The big folded up poster in the center of the magazine, practically the “main attraction” of the whole thing
Like the other person pointed out, what it is is literally in the name.
For any eggs out there, they do remove your testicles (bless), but the rest of it is much more like a magical girl transformation than a removal. All the blood vessels and nerves and skin gets preserved and it gets shuffled around into the positions your brain expects them to be in.
Actually, I got a penectomy! 🔪🍆
I’m nonbinary and I got genital nullification surgery. I have no genitals now.
Yeah, but it still really hurts when they sever your “excess” wages
into the positions your brain expects them to be in
This part is not exactly true. The different tissues are not mapped one-to-one to their homologues, simply because the geometry and proportions are quite different.
Lmao that was a good one
How I wish the average person would realise that they can still make jokes about trans people as you can about any group of people, just make jokes (like this) where it’s laughing with us, not at us. Where there’s no maliciousness and we’re all involved and laughing rather than being the butt of it.
Maybe someday we’ll properly get to that point. Thanks for the giggle :3
The trans experience inherently has so many absurd, objectively funny aspects about it. We’re really missing out on some really good comedy because of transphobia
Yeah unfortunately 😭 just gotta stock up on the jokes for the real ones - or until the topic climate hopefully eases up in the future. Have a good library of gold at the ready!
Ooo got any for the crowd?
The only innacurate part is that it was “months” later, not years.
This was back in the days when a “common” way to transition was to travel to Thailand and do several major surgeries.
Which seems to stem from the idea that you transition only via surgery, not HRT. IDK if they even had HRT in the 80s, though.
They had HRT in the Weimar Republic, though the order of things was weird then.
They had it in the 1960s for sure. Candy Darling got it, for example.
Despite the understandable scorn Playboy and Hefner have earned, there was a period of time where there were really interesting articles and good journalism being published next to the tits
That was sort of the beauty of being independent and uncouth. They didn’t have to worry about offending major brands/sponsorships because they weren’t beholden to typical ad agencies to begin with.
Unlike Rupert Murdoch’s The S*n.
Thanks for the censor, it still jumpscared me but it was easier to recover ❤️
Unfortunately, there’re a lot more UK rags owned by Murdoch than just that one :( and many others owned by other rightwing billionaires. It’s insane we have got to this point where our majority sources of our local news is mostly all foreign billionaire + politically captured
Saturday Light Nive?
That’s one of the two names adopted by the people of Liverpool after The S*n’s repeated, outrageous lies about the victims of the Hillsborough disaster. The other is The Scum. I think the paper is essentially unavailable if you live in the city. Nobody will stock it.
They’re famous for their Page 3 girls. They’d put naked women just inside the cover of their newspapers. They also ran campaigns counting down to the 16th birthdays of Charlotte Church and Emma Watson. The thing they seem to have forgotten is that it would still not be legal for the readers to sleep with these children, as neither is going to shag a 67 year old S*n reader consensually.
That countdown thing is vile, gods below.
Magazine in the UK which would post topless 16 year olds until it was made illegal.
Newspaper*
Is it though?
Fair point
The comics were great too
The joke rubric is alleged by my mother to have been exceptional and funny and a great reason to buy playboy back then.
It wasn’t just a porn magazine.
Yeah, the joke back in the day was that guys would say they “read Playboy for the articles” as a cover story so they didn’t have to say they were looking at porn. But at the same time, they did have really good articles. Funny, thought provoking, and surprisingly progressive.
They were also one of the first print magazines to embrace the internet. I remember them posting a really cool Hellboy motion comic on their website back in the 90s.
My favorite iteration of this joke is in the movie Smeakers, where Whistler, a blind character, is reading a braille edition of Playboy.
I guess they made the same joke in men in tights.

Blinkin reading a Braille edition of Playboy on the toilet?
in my comment thread, you are answering to a different comment. The braille comment is further down than yours.
looking at .org while not logged in it looks correct. might be an issue with your client.
One of my favorite movies and it kills me how much less people seem to care about the blind than ever.
I’m been saying for years that it’s not okay that US currency isn’t accessible to the blind.
It would be so simple too. A little notch with a sheet of the same plastic they use in Canadian currency that is moved up or down the bill based on the denomination would be enough.
Most people wouldn’t even notice it.
That one seems like a bad option. It’d be fine if you have a copy of every bill, but if you’re handed like a 50, how are you supposed to know it’s a 50 and not a 100 or a 20?
It’s better than nothing, but if we’re going to do it I’m betting there’s a better way.
I imagine experience. I bet if something like that were released, then people with visual impairments would be one of the first peoples in line to learn the difference so they would be able to quickly tell by texture exactly what denomination they’re holding.
And also, a lot of the world is on digital, so I’m sure most visually-impaired people would just swipe a card.
Hear hear! I have just noticed since I was a kid in the 80s the slow creep of just… not doing braille anymore in public spaces. Used to seem pretty common, now it seems rare.
I fucking love that movie.
They had also great and deep articles from what I gather
And incredibly popular writers would publish short stories and think-pieces in there. Playboy was genuinely quality content. The writing was arguably a higher bar than the photography.
Those were writers like Hunter Thompson, Norman Mailer, and Kurt Vonnegut. ‘Popular’ is an understatement for guys like that.
Also Isaac Asimov if I’m not mistaken.
Shel Silverstein of Giving Tree fame was also a frequent writer for them.
I met the guy who invented the Reebok pumps technology, and successfully sued Reebok for stealing his invention. He also invented the football flack jacket. The November 1980 Playboy had the most in-depth article that also focused on the person behind the inventions.
It was the “classy” porn magazine, if there can be such a thing. Good articles and jokes.
That’s the 80s version of watching hentai for the plot lol
This is why gender affirming care needs to be fully covered by the universal healthcare system.
That’s not the joke. The joke is getting paid less for being a woman
The more women you allow to transition, the less you need to pay your work force! (please ignore trans men, they’re used to being ignored)
No one ever asks how’s Waldo

They have always been those who woke among us, for those who choose to see them
Play the system, be unemployed
So it’s ok to refer to sex change as lopping off the dick and cutting off the balls? I would assume that’s pretty offensive. TIL, I guess.
I think the men are supposed to be a little ignorant in this. But also, what’s okay heavily depends on the setting
I thought suggesting that sex change operation consist of chopping of the dick without anesthesia goes beyond being a little ignorant but who am I to say? If people agree it’s funny and not offensive then I was wrong, that’s it.
You know how when one guys gets hit in the balls, another guy in a 1km radius also feels it? I think they were more so trying to just mke conversation based on that while making it more lighthearted for their friend in support of equalising her operation to the normalest good thing she could’ve been doing (for herself) “but had to get hit in the balls”, while also along the way expressing curiosity in the procedure.
- I’m likely overthinking tho and may be spoiled by a couple of amazing close friends
