Imo this starts to affect productivity. I spend at least 5 minutes every day to click that shit away. Adding the time this costs in my concentration, I’d say I lose easily 10-15 minutes of my daily productivity.
Then add the “Let’s see if the AI can do this. Oh, yeah, it can’t” and I lose even more time.
Look, I know you’ve been using this software for twenty years, and love how it works and what it does, but hear me out: what if we fuck it up? Like, a lot.

The drive to put AI on everything has never been pushed by anyone who genuinely understand the technology.
It is entirely pushed by billionaires who hate the rest of humanity and want legal chattel slavery from a populace that won’t resist. Hence the push towards AI, regardless that they hallucinate all the time.
This is the worst future. They’re also always so limited and can’t do anything even slightly controversial.

While I’ve found uses for local LLMs (ie I host) and even the bigger chat bots:
I feel the gen “AI” everywhere is just an excuse to collect data since they always use the online models… And if you are either not paying or paying api rates (per token… Or usually million token rate) it’s basically being provided significantly below cost.
Yeah I use chatgpt and Gemini for targeted tasks, data collection and organizing for blog posts and work proposals (yes I verify the data, I know about A.I. hallucinations), and how to’s for tasks I don’t do often or have never done.
Just yesterday I told it “I just bought the PC (linked to product page) I want to install Linux Mint but first I want to disable secure boot, provide a step by step guide to accomplish this” and after about a minute it spit out and detailed guide referencing the manufacturer’s website, their forum, and a third party guide. It even pulled tips and tricks from the forum with things like “tip: users report if you see this screen do this to correct it (link to forum thread)”
I’m not giving these access to my email or calendar or anything like that, once I can have a locally hosted LLM that can access that stuff then sure, as long as I can control my data. Until then I just use commercial LLMs as tools that I don’t fully trust.
are you even saving time, or productivity if you have double-triple check what the LLM even spit out.
When I as it for data it’s generally data that would take hours to find, ready through, accept or reject, then take notes and summarize. When I tell an AI to do it, it takes a minute or two for all the data collection and summarization. Then all I have to do is click the link provided with each piece of data and verify it, which only takes a few minutes generally.
So yes, AI saves me hours of researching and summarizing even with checking the source data.
AI is a tool. Or more exactly, AI is an accelerant. There are things you could have done yourself, but the AI can do it in seconds and now you just have to verify it and modify it. When used to create things within your skill set, more power to ya. Companies are shoving it into their products with no understanding of this.
Exactly, I use AI to save time, and find data I most likely wouldn’t have found myself. It’s a tool, not a replacement.
I think the biggest problem is AI has been portrayed in film and TV as this all powerful computer that can do everything, and that’s what everyone thinks they have now. If we compare AI to the growth of the Internet, we’re still in the ARPANET phase, there’s still a looong way to go.
I keep reading this “nobody wants AI” talking point. Is that really your experience in the real world? I’m surrounded by people who absolutely love that shit and use it for everything.
I’m by no means an AI enthusiast, but acting like people don’t want it, why it’s quite definitely the other way around is a bit weird. I feel like critics are inclined to replay the Blockchain playbook of “haha, a product with 0 use cases they try to push into everything”. But with AI it just isn’t applicable.
There’s so much valid criticism for AI, but saying it’s useless and nobody wants it makes you seem like a lunatic.

I appreciate your input and your perspective. My personal experience is this: One person is rather enthusiastic about GenAI, very few say there might be use cases where it might be useful, the majority does not want or use it.

The whole PDF file format is a mess. You can even exploit it and run Linux inside of it.
I was making a bunch of different versions of my resume and every time I saved to a PDF Adobe locked up trying to scan it with their AI
It’s been a while but LibreOffice has worked well and exported to PDF without problems for me.

A few months ago while shopping, I overheard an elderly gentleman being told by a sales rep that AI is utilized for some feature in the man’s new set of hearing aids. The old man looked so confused, like that one John Cena meme. I felt so bad for the guy
This is the biggest problem wifh genai, it takes over the meaning of any other AI… At most theis hearing aid “AI” is a small neural network to remove background (noise) vs foreground (talk), more likely it’s not even that complicated but still focused on nearest conversation and not other noise.
Exactly, we used to call this “digital noise filtering”, and we had it pretty damn well figured out.
You want to filter sound? Do some simple Fourier transforms and you’re all set. No need for a black-box “AI” model that is likely trained on data generated by a much more simple and efficient Fourier filter.
