If you jailbreak, can you revert to an older version of kindle os?
So glad I saw this post I’ve had an 8th gen kindle jammed under a pile of bullshit for quite a while because fuck bezos. Ended up being able to use winter break and now I can use the device without contributing to fascism. Today was a good day!
One more plug for using kobo libre!! I love it much more than my kindle, havent picked taht thing up in years… maybe ill jailbreak it just to set one more free…

Is it possible to import Kindle books to this device?
I ask because my Kindle library is fairly extensive and giving it up would be uncomfortable to say the least.
If you can manage to download your ebooks to your PC, you can use Calibre with a DeDRM plugin to release your Amazon

Calibre can handle a directly plugged in Kindle, no need to copy them to your PC first. I deDRMd them, then was able to just plug in my Kobo and copy all my books to the new device.

Just did with the adbreak method, was a little annoying having to get a US address and making a card for it, but the jailbreak process itself was smooth, and you can disable ads again after you are done.
I’m all for people doing this if they can.
Meanwhile, I love my Kobo e-reader and I only purchase e-books from Kobo (since Amazon eliminated “side loading”).

I have a Kobo Clara BW and it’s fantastic. Unfortunately, it doesn’t support my SO’s language well, so YMMV.
You’re welcome. There are a few exclusive books that only show up an Amazon but so far 99% of what I have been shopping for has been available on Kobo.
I also switched to Kobo about 6vmonths ago. Got the libra colour so i can read comics and manga too. I use annes archive for my ku only reads. Purchase titles through kobo(or direct from the author anytime its possible), or borrow from overdrive. Also, very recently discovered Instapaper is amazing for reading webnovels!
Do you have an easy way to strip the DRM from the Kobo ebooks? If not, then is it much different thank Amazon? I also have a kobo but don’t buy from their store. I mainly buy books on ebooks.com if they are DRM free. And maybe acquire others that aren’t DRM free.
One thing to note about the Kobo store is that it (unlike Amazon) lists the DRM status of a given book towards the bottom of the store page below the reviews. If you see something like “Epub 2 (DRM Free)” then that’s the format that the book will be in if you download it.
You can download a book that you’ve purchased directly from the website on the My Account/My Books subpage. I’ve tested this out and it can be a good way to get paid DRM free ebooks, if that’s what the publisher wants to sell.
Bookshop.org also has a DRM-free search filter and shares profits with local bookstores.
I thought I remember Amazon also listed that, but it’s moot at this point.

I have the DeDRM plugin set up on Calibre and it’s either it’s working perfectly or everything I’ve bought from Kobo didn’t come with DRM (I think it’s the first one).
That’s good to hear. The last (and only) book I bought on Kobos store I had to use Adobe Digital Editions I think, which was annoying since they don’t provide that for Linux.
Hmm, I do remember installing that at one point - it might be that I needed to extract a key from it to configure the plugin. I was on Windows then so it wouldn’t have been too hard.
I think DRM on Kobo books is dependent on what the publisher requests or something like that. The few I have bought don’t have DRM from what I can tell.
Amazon eliminated side loading? I’ve been using calibre to convert books to azw and transfer to my Kindle. Always worked fine for me. Unless they pushed out an update to break this?
What Amazon eliminated was your ability to download your books and then load them to your Kindle from your computer instead of using their whisper net.

The fact that they fixed the jailbreak just as I was about to do it was part of the reason I moved to Kobo (went with the Clara BW and am very happy with the upgrade).
If you are lazy put your kindle into airplane mode until you find time to jailbreak your kindle. I actually jailbroke it using the previous winterbreak method last week, since I had kept my kindle in airplane mode using calibre.
This is what I did. Haven’t felt the need to take it off of airplane mode yet.
Yeah, I put it into airplane mode when I heard Amazon was going to push an update removing some feature. Then just kept using it as I did before using calibre to send books.
Finally decided to jailbreak it and I am glad I did since the custom lockscreens and koreader has been cool.
I’m honestly surprised how many people I see doing this. No judgement , it’s just now how I use the device.
I couldn’t give up my syncing of progress! I love being able to pick up on the Kindle app on my phone if I’m in a waiting room then back to my kindle proper at home.
I’m jazzed to finally have been able to jailbreak my device so I can use KoReader on both the phone and Kindle and keep the same experience.
Is KOReader android only? I don’t see it in the App Store. The main feature of the Amazon reader apps for me is the position sync so I can read on the go. I’d hate to lose that feature.
Unfortunately I believe it isn’t available on iOS. On Android you can install it from a few sources. Directly from GitHub, or via F-Droid(or something similar). I’m with you though, that feature is key to me not scrolling forever.
the irony that it can be jailbroken by modifying the ads is funny. Sadly I expect this to be a super easy patch on Amazons part so if you have the device probally should do this fast lol
The first advertisement that I’ve purposely clicked in years, and it was to load a file so I could jailbreak my Kindle. Felt great.
what’s so particular about these kindles that a simple android tablet can’t provide?
These things are very heavily optimized for the singular purpose of reading books. They can’t do much of anything else, but they do that one thing very well and very efficiently. They run a custom, lightweight Linux OS that’s very aggressive with its battery management. Coupled with an e-ink display, they sip power and can run for weeks on a single charge. That’s not something a simple android can provide.
I lost mine in my house. Looked for it in April, couldn’t find it. In September I found it and the battery was at 56%.
Also you can’t read a tablet in direct sunlight.

A kindle (and similar devices) are cheap, and light. great if all you want is to read on them.

No, but Amazon’s are very often the cheapest by far, easiest to find used (since more are sold in the first place). On Prime days they’re often very cheap.

No. But they’re really inexpensive and link up to people’s Amazon accounts so it’s easy to manage your books, if you are a person who likes to use Amazon for that.
I’ve had two Kindles, the first was before they had touch screens, and I loved it (this was a long, long time ago). Even with the hard case eventually I broke the screen after many years of travel and use, and hated the one I replaced it with. Awful piece of garbage, I wanted to return it and get one with physical buttons but they didn’t make them any more and I was too lazy to do second hand searching. I’ve never used Amazon to buy e books but I got a lot of free ones over the years (mostly cookbooks) and it was handy to be able to just download them directly to the device, but I prefer to manage books over USB and that always worked fine.
E-ink is amazing. Battery life lasts for ages, which really is what you want for a dedicated reader. There’s other types on the market, but it’s hard to compete with Amazon’s prices and feature set - especially because they sell ones that are ad-supported and that REALLY drives the prices down for people that are willing to have their lock screen be an ad that goes away when they wake the device, which is an easy compromise for most.
My Kindle just collected dust now, I use a supernote as a note taker and I use it for ebooks also. It was about $500 USD - granted it does way, way more than a Kindle, but yeah. I could probably get an ad-supported Kindle for 1/10 the cost, maybe, not sure what their prices are these days. Not saying that competing dedicated readers are in that price range, they’re not, but Kindle dominates the market due to brand recognition, advertising, and as far as I know they were the first to really offer a product like it in the first place so they’ll always have a big piece of the market, like iPods did in the MP3 player space vs objectively superior competitors that came after it.
E-readers have much longer battery life since the hardware is tailored to the use case.
Also better to use a device you may already have than chuck it on the e-waste pile and buy something brand new.
This jailbreak is for people who already have a Kindle, don’t think anyone is suggesting to buy one for this…
Ink displays are more comfortable on the eyes like reading something on paper than a regular display. Prefer them to physical books now.

Yeah Amazon and I have a pretty adversarial relationship about what I should be able to do on my Kindle, and my next device won’t be from them. But in the meantime I’m loving having my jailbreak back, and I made sure to prevent updates properly this time. Koreader is great and the thing even has a Gameboy emulator!
I’ve just done this with 5.18.5.0.1 and it works.
