In short, what are some awesome songs to listen to in that are from the country/region/whatever you live in, were born in, or both? Spotify thinks the only music I like is random American bands that nobody has ever heard of (note: I am not American). No shame to them, they actually make pretty good music, but I would like some variety.

Anything worth listening to would be good (from rock to pop, hard metal to folk, anything is fine). I would prefer non-English songs if possible, I like the beats and such you see)

edit: currently I have added a bunch of songs suggested on different corners internet (from Finnish polkas to Balkan rock, Brazilian pop to Polish folk music, and Gorbachev-era Russian bands to Scottish singers)

    周杰倫(Jay Chou) - 青花瓷 (Blue and White Porcelain). YouTube link

    So Jay Chou (Taiwanese actually…) was an absolute phenomenon in mainland China when I was growing up. Just about all of his songs are good & have mass appeal, but specifically I think this song was something I’ve heard just about everywhere and anywhere (including from a street performer when I visited again a few months ago!) so I’m nominating it as a must-listen

    Also don’t worry too much about the lyrics; Jay Chou is known for rapping a lot & I couldn’t understand half of his lyrics when growing up…

      My favorite Australian song right now is I HATE RICH CUNTS by MUDRAT.

      Edit: I also really like Tom Cardy. If you’re a fan of comedic music, at least check out Big Breakfast.

        When Gord Downie the lead singer of the Tragically Hip got terminal cancer, he went on tour. His final stop was Ontario, and they streamed it live on CBC (our national news network) to approximately 12 million viewers (Canada had a population of about 38 million)

        He died less than a month later. Our prime minister released a tribute statement, and held a press conference over it. Our House of Commons observed a moment of silence. The Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL Hockey Team) brought down one of the retired numbers from the rafters during their next game, because Gord had mentioned him in 50-mission cap. Almost every radio station that plays music switched to Hip songs for the day. The Canadian press gave him newsmaker of the year for 2016, then again for 2017 because of how significant the reaction to his death was.

        Dude was a legend both musically, and also in terms of the causes he championed. Especially the Indigenous reconciliation stuff.

    I’m from Belgium.

    I suppose Technotronic’s Pump Up the Jam is now more well-known again as a running joke in Philomene Cunk’s show. In a similar vein, there’s The Immortals’ Techno Syndrome, better known as “Mortal Kombat”. But these are both English, of course.

    As for songs in our local languages, on the Dutch side Gorki’s Mia always ranks highly (but I’m not sure how much you get from it without understanding the lyrics) while Laïs’ rendition of 't Smidje has some weird international appeal. On the French side there’s several strong hits like the entire discography of Stromae, Plastic Betrand’s Ça Plane Pour Moi, or Eurovision-winning Sandra Kim’s J’aime La Vie.

        It sounds that way on first listen! But it’s actually about his daughter.

        If I remember correctly: during a holiday and a large family gathering, his young daughter fell and hit her head very seriously. She lost consciousness and it seemed like she was in mortal danger. Gave them (her parents) the scare of their life! They put her in the car and sped all the way to the hospital emergency room.

        This song is about that incident. “I wanted to tell you how much I love you” is what he kept thinking on that drive.

        She’s alright now :)

    Babymetal might be something you could look into. Japanese band with some English.

    I don’t speak Japanese, but enjoy listening to them.
