I personally just use an overhead mic. Bit sensitive, but likely could be compensated

The SM58 vs SM57 is the best.

All of those yes but not the kick and bass mic. Had to buy a beta 52 for those.

Two or three inches up from the bottom-center of a non-ported kick drum works in a pinch, but never tried it with a ported head.

I believe I’ve seen a bass cab mic’ed similarly as well, though I for sure saw a Beta 58 (not a 52) used for this purpose quite a few times by pointing the center of the capsule directly at the bottom-center edge of the speaker ---- looks like partially mic’ing the wood, but I remember it worked really well!

I’m not particularly good at micing up cabinets but with the 57, my guitar tone sounds good no matter how bad my placement seems to be (slightly off center damn near touching grill). I tried so many ways to get bass decent on it but the 52 just worked without effort. I’m sure an expert could probably get the 52 to sound decent/good but for the rest of us, just use a 52. Don’t have a 58 so can’t comment on that but I doubt any Shure mics are bad.

Came in for this comment! I usually use an SM-57 on vocals, guitars and snares. The sort of singers I record really love grabbing the 57 and jumping around just like they do on stage. SM-58 is too fancy for these guys.

They probably took pointers from those crusty-ass black metal bands that walk into the studio asking the engineer for his shittiest mic, then spend half the session finding the worst way to rig it. They don’t need repeat takes anyway, the sloppy playing is part of the vibe.

And then there’s Fenriz who actually cares about drum sound - but then again he probably doesn’t categorise as crusty-ass.

The amount of shitty podcasts who use the SM7 and just don’t bother to pair it with a nice pre-amp is too damn high. It is so high, that shure now makes a dB version with an in-built pre-amplifier. That mic sounds very particular when it is improperly used and is a telltale sign the podcast is going to be shit. All the hype, no actual knowledge. (save a very few exceptions of good writers before they learned more about sound engineering)

I’d argue that you see a lot more people having no clue about audio and doing a podcast / stream use the SM7B.
