i got a used copy of Tamagotchi life for the 3ds when I was a kid. The original owner was a girl and there was no way to change your own gender so I was just stuck as a girl. At first I hated it, but then I really enjoyed going over to my virtual friends as 2 girls and wishing we were married…

anyways like 10 years later I am now a woman who likes women. I choose to blame that 8 year old who sold her cartridge to GameStop.

Also there’s a homosexuality mod now

edit: the other images are just as hilarious

In Italy we have a hack ROM called “Pokémon Marron merda” (Pokémon shit-brown) that asks whether you have a dick or a pussy, and if you answer pussy it will reply with “I’m sorry but this game is extremely sexist, so you will now stay stuck in this room with no exit until you reset the game and choose dick”

Later games just show you a series of pictures and ask which one you look like.

They’ll still choose your gender pronouns based on which picture you choose, though.

Except it is? The problem with insisting this is “basic biology” is that it shows how ignorant you are to advanced biology. Quantum physics also “isn’t how physics works” if you’re limited to a high school level understanding of the subject.

… That would be sex. Chromosomes are used to identify the sex of an animal. Male and female describe two possible variations of sexes. It’s how we know that there’s a species of lizard that are all genetically identical females - clones, if you will. Or how we’ve identified something like 417 different sexes in one mold species based on different chromosome combinations. We don’t phenotype babies at birth, usually.

Gender is a societal/cultural concept that has meant many things (sometimes even competing ideas) over the centuries. Historically, they’re connected to secondary sex characteristics in humans, but not always. One of the oldest known gods had a priesthood made up exclusively of trans women, for example. Old versions of the Torah use a pronoun specifically for trans men that recognizes them as men trapped in the bodies of women. Many cultures throughout history had 3 or more recognized genders before their culture was supplanted by the fairly recent Christian concept of the gender binary. And even that is hypocritical, as God is nonbinary and says in the Bible that nonbinary people are His favorite as they are the most like to Him.

“Hi there nice to meet you. Would you mind sharing your pronouns so I can address you how you’d like to be preferred?”

Then respect whatever answer you were given and refer to them that way.

It’s not hard to support people’s identities, it just requires caring enough to respect them. You don’t even have to like it yourself. But if it seems really hard to respect a person’s identity it’s almost certain the problem doesn’t lie with them or their identity.

just don’t ask for gender? let the player either design a sprite or pick one and pick pronouns or just refer to the player with they/them. Sex is only a fact insofar as the collection of bodily features we commonly refer to as sex exist. the reference to it is still a social choice, and we could’ve just as easily picked another group of features, or none at all.

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren’t unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don’t rush mod actions. If a case doesn’t need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
