Sorry if it’s a dumb question. I’m not even knocking or shaming, I just think they’re really funny and want to see more if you know of them. Not accounts that downvote, accounts that ONLY downvote. Rare ones. Like weapons-grade haters.

I’d collect them in my user tags. And like, just observe what they respond to.

For me, it’s really simple math: I know my time on this planet is limited, like it is for every single one of us, and there is no way to add a second to it when its time to go. So, do I really want to waste a second of that time I have left worrying on non-sense or on things I can’t act upon (like people acting dumb)? No ;)

Oh for sure. Literally no reason to care. But what if you got a downvote on the most innocuous comment that could make nobody mad? Something not even good, just completely value neutral. And then in your curiosity, you discovered an account that downvotes so many people that lemvotes freezes your browser trying to display it.

Like, it’s not even worrying or anger, votes don’t mean anything. It’s just like of spectacular. Like, woah! I didn’t know it was possible to dislike so many things. I know I shouldn’t have looked but it’s funny that I did because look that was there.

Oh for sure. Literally no reason to care. But what if you got a downvote

Well, I would have gotten a downvote, or more than one. It happens from time to time, out of the blue. That’s fine. As long as I know I’ve been sincere in whatever has been downvoted, why should I care? It’s ok to disagree.

And then in your curiosity, you discovered an account

I would not because I sincerely don’t care and could not be bothered to check who voted (I was not even aware one could check). When I open it, I have to see on my profile that I do receive votes but I consider that part of the webpage (I don’t do social on phone, only on my computer in my browser) one of those ‘not as good as it could be’ part of Piefed/the Fediverse. And this does not prevent me from being grateful (and happy) it exists and I can use it, if you’re wondering ;)

Like, it’s not even worrying or anger, votes don’t mean anything.

It could even be some rogue bot. Or some kiddo thinking they’re so smart by randomly downvoting things. It could be anything.

It could even be someone that sincerely may not like or disagree with what I just said. That’s Fine with me. Someone that may not like how I said it (even more likely knowing English is not my first language). Or someone that just dislike me as a person? That’s fine too (even though I would consider an odd choice to judge a person on a mere comment)…

Like I said, what I do care about is (my) time. And for that reason I will block without any hesitation anyone (I won’t judge them and won’t call for them to being banned, I will just decide they’re not worth of my time):

            • That is trying to troll me. I won’t even try to argue or to explain my motivations to anyone. I will post a last reply something along the lines ‘ok, thx have a nice day, bye’ and will block them once and for all.
            • That is obviously trying to create conflict or to argue for the sake or arguing. And not just when it’s directed towards me. I mean, the moment I realize someone doing that, they’re blocked.
            • The same with attention seekers and
            • Serial complainers/haters.

And, yes, I’m also 100% fine with people blocking me for whatever reason, no hard feelings on my part ;)

Like, it’s not even worrying or anger, votes don’t mean anything. It’s just like of spectacular. Like, woah! I didn’t know it was possible to dislike so many things.

Consider this: people do kill one another for a few cents or even just for “daring” looking at them. They will murder (while other people will applaude them for doing it, and celebrate the death of that other person) because they don’t share the same political ideology. So, yeah, people can also vote like full morons, if not worse.

            Edit:

For the sake of clarity: I will downvote from time to time myself. When I consider a post contributing nothing or being too rude. But more often, I will upvote what I consider useful/interesting/funny.

I don’t really pay any attention to this but piefed shows an “attitude” score on profile pages indicating the ratio of upvotes to downvotes a person is making.

Yours (OP) is 100% indicating you only ever upvote comments?

I’m not sure how this is calculated and whether it is reliable or captures the entirety of someone’s activity.

I’ve heard that! That’s actually one of the main reasons I haven’t switched, it sounds very neat but I feel terrified of having it evaluate me. I don’t always downvote based on “I don’t like this” or even “I think this should be ranked less visible”. But it might still look like I’m being a dick in a vacuum.

That would mean that my downvotes haven’t federated somehow then. I definitely downvote stuff.

Yeah I had assumed it wouldn’t necessarily have visibility over every comment you’ve ever voted on, but IDK enough about how activitypub works.

I don’t think it’s worth worrying about being evaluated? As in, people with piefed are evaluating you regardless.

That’s fair. It’s more like an internal thing. Like, I would know there’s a “naughty/nice” grade being applied to me so my behavior would change regardless of whether or not anyone looks at it or cares.

  • A few times. And I suspect them to be alts since a few have been 2-3 years old with no posts, no comments and the only interactions they have are downvotes. But since there is no commonality between these accounts and any normal one, it’s impossible to say definitively that they are alts.

Yeah, I’ve banned more than a few sockpuppet accounts. The thing these people don’t realize is that since votes federate by default, mods and admins can see pretty clearly when you’re using alts to harass people or upvote your own comments.

It’s wild what some people do here. I got accused of it by someone who simply said something dumb. I got a .world account only for when .today goes down and it literally has downvoted zero times. Hey tacobuttplug, hope you’re still miserable.

  • I found an account that went on my profile and downvoted a bunch of comments in rapid succession (because timestamps are withing those 2 minutes), particulary ones complaining about China / Chinese culture. I went in their profile and apparantly they linked to a website… which I assume it’s their own site (or could be impersonation not sure), which linked to their social medias and they appear to be another Chinese diaspora judging by their name and profile pic…

I’m so confused lmao… nationalism much?

Oof yeah sometimes it’s easy to set someone off. I don’t think I’ve had a personal dedicated hater like that yet. I got heavy handed with the block function when I first got here though. People should use that instead of going through your profile.

That said I also remember acting similarly petulant at least once when I first got here. Maybe it’s something people can grow out of.

(But can you send me your hater’s profile?)

Some instances have this baked in as a way to anonymize downvotes, these accounts are not real accounts but are just federated to other instances so they can’t see what actual account the downvote came from. I believe this is now a standard PieFed feature.

IMO, making downvotes public was kind of a mistake of the protocol. There’s a reason why most software stopped showing them publicly, but the fact that they’re there on the backend means a determined user can peek to find out who to get mad at, and I think that’s a problem.

THAT’S interesting. I had no idea there’d be something like this going on under the fediverse’s hood.

One I saw had a few upvotes and was an active commenter so I assume that was their real account.

Also you’re the first person I’ve met against public votes. I was too but then I just got curious and then I got morbidly curious when I found certain accounts. This probably isn’t a healthy curiosity but it looked so funny to see somebody just downvote EVERYTHING thousands of times. Like they woke up and chose anger.

              I do that.

I want to see ACCURATE vote-stats on my comments, NOT with the “self-esteem-plushie” self-upvote.

I find accuracy-of-view much more valuable than social-esteem’s “cushioning”.

Were I to code a fediverse-server it’d have no means of upvoting/downvoting one’s own posts or comments: everything would start from zero, right where it ought, for accuracy-of-view.

              ( emotional-disinformation is a category/kind of disinformation, & it-too is a comfort-addiction among too-many of our world.

The older I get, the more-ruthless I have to become, in order to cut-through all the disinformation-gunk that humankind’s snuffing itself, its viability with.

Emotionally-comforting-disinformation is disinformation exactly as “paper mills” are scientific disinformation. )

Sometimes I forget to so-so, but every now & then, I’ll go through my profile, removing any polluting upvotes.

              Accuracy’s better than pseudovalidity/comfort.

To be fair, people don’t undo their default upvote on their posts because of self-esteem, it’s just not noticing. You are right that a more authentic system though would simply not have any default upvotes, and additionally - not allow the OP to upvote their own posts./comments.

It’s been a point of discussion a few times. Sometimes mods have wondered whether it’s worse to kick out one of the small population on their comm or to risk letting someone discourage many others by downvoting them.

I suspect they are people who follow the general trend, which is to take in a post title and then respond on a general impression of whether it makes them feel good or bad, but have some kind of depression that makes only the bad have enough effect to make them downvote. Or they’re trying to attack Lemmy itself in the most childish way possible.

Honestly, if you care enough, you should be able to spin up an instance and then run SQL queries on the PostgreSQL/MySQL database backing the Lemmy instance, which is what lemvotes.org does.

I don’t think I have anything to offer the online world in creating an instance.

I mean, people create single-user instances for their own use. You don’t have to let anyone else use it. I’m just saying that if you’re interested in doing stuff like “give me a list of all users that only downvote”, that’d probably be a reasonable way to do it. Take time to set up the instance, sure, but then you can get more-definitive answers to questions like that and run analyses on voting or whatever.

I didn’t know it was like that.

                If you go to:

                https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/list

And then click on the “Active Users” column to sort by that column and look for instances with 0 or 1 “Active Users”, then look for instances with “Signups” set to “false” (i.e. new users can’t get accounts on those instances), that’ll probably give a feel for about how many “private” instances used by a single user there are out there.
