I’m here from Reddit. They banned me for absolutely no reason. That’s frustrating. How works Lemmy ?

People around here really love Linux.

Not saying it’s a bad thing. Linux is great.

But people around here reeeealy love Linux.

Be wary of tankies. What are tankies? It’s a pejorative term for authoritarian communists who will claim Pol Pot, Mao, and Stalin have done nothing wrong. They also support modern day Russia even though they’re supposedly a liberal democracy because they’re likely Russian psy ops guys.

We’re still a pretty small community here and you’ll see a lot of familiar usernames but you’ll eventually fit right in to our tapestry of performative outrage and bickering. Depending on your home instance, you may not be able to see all the fediverse communities. I recommend hopping around until you find one that fits your style, like dbzer0.

If you refer to left policies and people as “liberal,” they get really pissy on here. You should do it anyway because linguistic prescriptivism is stupid.

The vegans, cyclists, and feminists are a bit feral; they tend to generate drama/ragebait threads at a higher rate than the norm. Good to read if you have popcorn handy.

Post what you got - folks here like content.

Copy pasting from another thread very similar to this one,

Welcome! I typically say that the Threadiverse (a decent all encompassing term to mean “reddit format” e.g. link aggregator type social media that includes Piefed, bin, Lemmy etc.) is about where reddit was 10-15 years ago.

I recommend lemmyverse.com for comm discovery, sometimes your might be looking for a comm that does exist, but for whatever reason your instance just hasn’t picked up on it (typically someone from your instance has to manually go to a new comm and sub to it if your instance missed the automated bot federation from Lemmy-federate.com

We’re not without our cons though, biggest problem we have are probably the Tankies, but here they’re mostly on what’s known as the Tankie Triad: lemmy.ml, lemmygrad and hexbear. For the most part, grad and hex are widely defederated from (Users and content of those instances won’t be “synced” and you won’t see them) and you only have to worry about .ml, but on Lemmy you can do a personal instance wide block if you’d rather just not deal with them. .ml tends to be more subtle opting for censorship of dissent before things get crazy on their threads and allowing certain propaganda to flourish (If you wish to see documentation of it, checkout !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works ) or the megathread here (is .ml centric specifically) Here on Lemmy all moderator actions are public and available for viewing on what’s known as the “modlog”.

Mod log was something that caught me off guard at first because I didn’t know why I was able to look at that

But it really is a fantastic idea to basically give moderators a real incentive to act fairly. I doubt that reddit mods would be that way if everyone could see what they’re doing

I honestly don’t know or care what my lemmy karma is, or even where to look for it.

Also I’ve been banned from a reddit sub and a lemmy community for asking questions I honestly didn’t know the answers to. Reason given in both cases was trolling or ragebaiting. Some communities are highly insular and suspicious of outsiders who don’t have the group mindset. Someone here called lemmy “diverse” - that can translate to a diverse variety of monocultural echo chambers.

Lemmy is politically extremely left leaning, so prepare to get downvoted for just having center opinions, let alone conservative ones. But unlike Reddit, downvotes (and upvotes for that matter) don’t mean shit.

Lemmy is politically extremely left leaning

I feel like the average Lemmy user is a progressive first and foremost. And then we do have certain instances that harbor far-left people and they can get really loud.

But you know what’s interesting? One of the reasons I left Facebook, a solid few years ago, was I was getting the worst kind of far-left propaganda in my timeline. It was only here and there, but one pro-USSR meme is one too many. I always remember that anytime I’m wrestling a tankie on here.

There’s a butt load of tankies here. They are incredibly hostile to anyone who doesn’t agree with them. You’ll just have to block them one by one.

      Can I ragebait them?

      • The cold war was indeed a global struggle to contain totalitarianism, and while the US certainly had a bunch of illicit, criminal side quests, by and large it worked quite well. Most of the evil in the world was festered by the russian colonial empire disguising as a “transnational” entity
      • russia sucks ass :-)

        Can I ragebait them?

        Always 😄

US certainly had a bunch of illicit, criminal side quests

Lmao. Every bad thing that the US did was just a “side quest” that deviates from the overall pure and good intentions. Every bad thing the USSR did shows that they were inherently evil.

Mohammad Mossadegh was the progressive, peaceful, prime minister of Iran, who had zero alignment with the Soviets and only tried to assert Iran’s autonomy over its natural resources against the British colonizers who had built their entire empire off of stealing Iranian oil - deposed by the CIA in the name of “anti-communism,” and replaced by a literal monarch that spent decades hunting down and annihilating the Iranian left with secret police. But of course, that’s just a “side quest.”

Operation Condor, in which the US engaged in widespread election interference across South America, promoting right wing authoritarians and setting up “banana republics” to keep the cheap goods coming, that whole continent was just a little “side quest.”

Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, where the US dropped massive amounts of chemical weapons on poor rice farmers trying to assert control of their own land and resources. Indonesia, the mass killings of hundreds of thousands of activists, teachers, ethnic minorities, etc, by the US-backed Suharto regime, once again, a regrettable little “side quest.”

Exactly how many countries do you have to do “side quests” of terror and looting in the name of “stopping totalitarianism” do you have to do before they count as the “main quest?”

Welcome. You are now a Lemming.

Don’t worry to much about people telling you to hate this instance or this other, you’ll find out on your own. Use heavily the blocking fonction and everything will be fine.

You don’t find a niche community to post or comment in? Do the same on the less niche but related community.
Around here people hate AI, love beans, Start Trek and Linux. You can disagree and still enjoy the memes.

Lemmy is like many tiny Reddits called instances. You barely realise you switch from one to another while browsing happily expect for “instance nationalism”. It is smaller but more humane. That’s about all you need to start.

Don’t hesitate to share you hobbies to get recommandation. Here is mine anyway : !superbowl@lemmy.world

    Enjoy.

It’s fun and diverse. The latter is particularly true if you manage to skip tons of US politics-related posts similar to the ones you find on non-Fediverse platforms. Try non-English language channels. Those are far more globally diverse, smart and interesting (aka less US-centric).

Here’s a list of hundreds of communities in the Lemmyverse: https://lemmyverse.net/communities
