Psh. In my experience, Linux users don’t beg people to change their OS. They just make fun of you and act like they’re somehow superior to you for the OS you use.

I only recently decided to switch. The biggest reason for me was setting up Windows 11 on other people’s laptops and seeing just how hard Microsoft pushes you to make an account, as well as the occasional ads I’ve seen. So with Windows 10’s end of life, I decided I don’t want to put up with that BS anymore. I still have Win10 as a back up if I need it for anything.

I haven’t seen a single ad in the eight months or so I’ve had Win 11.
It took about five minutes after initial setup to customize everything the way it used to be. Nothing about this OS has been worth complaining about.

Ok, so if you want to use Windows 11, you do you. Whatever. But don’t try to slide lies past us. I use Windows 11 for work, and I see ads All. The. Time. Ads for OneDrive in the file manager, ads for 1Password and Opera in the start menu. When I try to install Firefox or Brave, I get ads for Edge (and again every time Edge updates). I get more nags to sign up for Microsoft 365 than I can even remember. I get ads in the notification tray. I get ads for terrible free-to-play games in the search results page. I get ads for Game Pass on the lock screen.
And yes, I’ve turned off all the settings. Somehow they always manage to get turned back on whenever Windows updates. I have to have it basically stock for dev testing, so I can’t do any registry tweaks or uninstall any updates to get rid of them.
So use the OS if you want, and use a Microsoft account if you really want your usage data to get slurped up by whatever the next thing is (I think it’s “Recall” this time). But don’t tell us that the snarling mouth in the corner of the room licking its lips isn’t there.
Not lying, actually having a fine time with it. Don’t know why you think I’d be lying, there’s nothing for me to gain from it.

Have you seen how some Linux users treat people who don’t use exactly what they think is the hottest shit? Even towards people who use as much FOSS as they can but still need some proprietary stuff for certain use cases because FOSS alternatives are not quite there yet. It’s annoying as hell and comes up in every single discussion that vaguely fits the topic. I would say the comparison to Mormons is not that far off.

I recently had to install windows on a separate SSD and I was shocked to find I had to manually find and install nearly every single driver. Like wtf, bazzite and Linux Mint does that shit for you

I never tell people to switch to anything from their current OS. I only recommend them to use things when they express discomfort or say they’re fed up with their current OS. That’s the time to strike. If you tell people to switch from something they’re fine with… Nah. Going nowhere with that.

And they still don’t want to hear it. Recently a Coworker approached me because she needed to move every photo from one folder to another and she has been dragging and dropping them all day but its just to many. While technically some Windows people know its possible with Windows cmd in a one-liner, most if not all Linux users will know the command in a heartbeat.
There is exactly one OS that improves the skills of its users just by using it.
Maybe if Windows and Mac users wont act like a bug stuck on its back once they encounter the slightest hint of a problem and start bothering the Linux guy with it, the Linux guy would be less condescending on their OS choice.

Uhh…I’m a linux evangelist, but is that command “ctrl+a, cut, ctrl+v in new folder?” Why would you need anything else if they’re all going from one folder to another, short of lacking a GUI entirely? Hell, move the whole folder to the new desired path, rename it to whatever the new folder would be named, bam new folder?
Agreed, however I think in most cases it’s more than just tech illiteracy, I think it’s actual illiteracy, or atleast an aversion to reading.
From my exexperience, the way the average windows user reacts to an unexpected error message is with rage and frustration while also not attempting to understand the message. Although it can be hard since windows error messages are usually terrible. I think microsoft knows this and that’s why newer windows errors look like this:
The average Linux user will read the error and research it to resolve it themselves. But it’s a lot easier when the error message is actually meaningful and the community documents issues and answers questions honestly. Although again, it all hinges on the ability to read.

Arch promoters are the worst. I believe anyone suggesting Arch to convert people are Windows/Mac marketing. If you already use Linux, then Arch could be useful for you. But anyone even remotely new or experienced but more interested in using their computer rather than configuring an OS shouldn’t get an Arch recommendation.
I don’t ever see people promoting Arch to convert users from Windows. Plenty of Arch-based distros though, like Garuda, CachyOS, Bezzite, or (not really recommended, but an example) SteamOS. There are lots of great distros based on Arch that come bundled with all the packages most users will need. Arch is just for the users that want to remove every last bit of stuff they don’t need and handle it all themselves so they have exactly the minimum they want, which only has minor utility and is not good for new users who don’t even know what exists.
I don’t really ever see anyone promote Arch. People have this hard on for hating on Arch users that’s based on decade-old preconceptions, and they somehow perpetrate them without substance.
If you don’t want to recompile your kernel every day, you may as well buy a Mac.

I’m actually the opposite on this because I agree. I use Arch (btw) but I’m also aware this is not the OS for the uninitiated. Arch users who suggest it for the jumping off point from Windows are: a) dicks, and b) delusional in thinking this is a reasonable UX, and c) they are actually giving Arch a bad name by suggesting it inappropriately.
I use Arch (still, btw) because I want the bleeding edge on many things, I actually prefer the shell for most admin tasks, and it lets me fully customize my install, not installing any bloat I don’t want. But I’m also very comfortable with Linux and have used various other distros before this one for decades.
When a friend asks me which Linux flavor, I try to take into account their use case. Gaming only? Bazzite, SteamOS, or maybe Mint. Productivity? Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Mint. Power user ready for Arch? They probably already know and I don’t need to tell them.
Steam OS which is based on Arch doesn’t need much first time configuration. It’s the greatest invention since bread slicer
