To be fair, even on Reddit, there were about 10000x more lurkers/commenters than there were posters.

Reddit just had a massive population, so there were more posters than you could reasonably keep track of.

While the fediverse/Lemmy has grown significantly, it is still pretty small in comparison to the daily active Users on Reddit at its height, shortly prior to the first great exedous.

Reddit/Digg was a link aggregator, so the fact that this platform is often mostly memes shows how little we’re actually engaging with the web as a network of blogs/personal sites/news etc by now in this world of paywalls, blocking adverts, cookie preferences, and age verification. Do actually share cool stuff you find though.

As long as it’s the right people, I don’t really care. It’s about building community anyway, not consuming it.

This is not a sign of health. It just means that a small amount of people is in control of the narrative. Ironic, considering lemmy and what it proposes to project.

Edit: Yes please, downvote. Lemmy is the digital equivalence of gentrification.

Be the change you want to see in the world. Spin up your ideologically pure instance that does everything right and show us how to do things.

I lurk, comment, and occasionally post. I’m certainly not one of the 20. I’m not sure what that makes me.

I have no patience for campism, which puts me on the bad side of many people on here who adore playing tribalist games about how some atrocities and some racism is good, for some bizarre fucking reason.

Separately, I argue with a very bitter tone, which also puts me on the bad side of many people, and those folk are much more justified in feeling negatively towards me.

Well, I thought so too & I still am really happy for all the posts (I didn’t know about their mod history, I don’t follow such politics), but I (Evil_Shrubbery@thelemmy.club) just got perma-banned from history comm a few minutes ago for saying countries with permanently present USA troops & USA nuclear weapons, and where USA gov influences what is taught in schools etc are “colonies”.

This wasn’t against any rules & it was explanatory to why the OPs post pic ever came to existence.

Idk, banning any slight USA “criticism” (if that’s even what that was) feels like unnecessary shrinking the community, but modding is work too & someone has got to do it … then again vibe banning feels like a wrong way forward.
Generally I don’t think ppl should be banned solely on pov (without being uncivil or something actually bad). No warning or a chance to reply. Just ban.

I guess I can still read, but not updoot their history memery.

It wasn’t about “USA criticism”, but the idea that South Korea is an American ‘colony’ is not only bizarre but a common tankie canard - one which you repeated in several comments in that thread.

POV is often something actually bad. I’m not here to make the comms I moderate a safe space for campists and fascists or their talking points. If you want to talk bullshit about ‘occupied Korea’, that’s what the tankie triad is for.

This isn’t a metaphorical Nazi bar, and I’m not about to let it become one no matter how politely it’s phrased.

(Sorry for the late reply, I’m a lemm.ee refuge & I’m still looking for my next home instance, nowdays I mainly use lemmy.zip or thelemmy.club, same username.)

Oh, I’m def not a tankie, I just see a lot of “USA gloriously won the WWII” oneliners & I might overcorrect sometimes.

I live in EU, not that far from a USA military base with USA nuclear weapons & have seen USA influences on early school textbooks (eg the food pyramid).

I often say we are “colonies” too - but with like quotation marks so that it’s obvious from the context that I do not mean that we like pay literal taxes & get our government directly picked by USA (so no, South Korea isn’t a literal colony, just perhaps gets more influenced by USA than their other main trading partners bcs of political relations).
(Also in EU NATO countries - it’s not like the relationships to USA aren’t fairly one-sided, my country def won’t get a permanent military base on USA soil if it wished that for some reason.)

I’m not here to make the comms I moderate a safe space for campists and fascists or their talking points.

Fair enough (& I’m glad if that is your goal), but perhaps consider making at least a broad, generalized list of what that is (the rules section, which I generally actually read, is very short iirc).

I’m not that educated in such subculture things* & honestly had no idea that would be against the comms rules - ie if “USA colonialism/imperialism”, or whatever a better description of that is, would be mentioned in the rules, then it’s obvious that it’s off the table & just wouldn’t talk about that (I’m compliant to ones house rules in general/in principle).

Without your reply here I would have never known why I go bananered (I’m not even arguing the ban, but it actually makes a difference in my life just known the reason/understanding the mechanic, so thx for that).

*I mean that bcs my mind doesn’t organise things by people, eg I rarely/never take sides where all arguments of one side are automatic bs & the other sides arguments are fine.

Check Bloomcole’s comment history, that will give you a clue why he says that. It includes sophisticated comments such as:

Een kaaskut waarschijnlijk, de grootste ukronazi lulzuigers. Kom maar naar Antwerpen. Kan je gratis komen met het mongolenbusje? Ik bitchslap je wel terug naar huis

That said, PugJesus’ !fediverseslander@lemmy.world could come off as a bit odd, but that’s nothing in comparison.

Yeah and it’s not the only comment like that. The comment link from when I banned them is dead now. It and the other comments are harder to find now, because they posted it on their lemm.ee alt. I think that’s why they haven’t been banned yet on Lemmy.world.
